"Come on guys we have to find shelter before nightfall." my mouth is dry as a desert my stomach empty as an urn with no ashes. Autumn was beginning to merge into winter snow had already fallen on the mountain and valley's and our uniform had little to no insulation. Melanie, me, Tyler and Jude walk in front, the others in there partners behind us.
Everyone walked silently I'm guessing it was because they were thinking about what had happened an hour or two ago. The aircraft further ahead of us was not able to land because of the terrain so they went on. The other had gone down they had no warning, from what we gathered there were no survivors; made me wonder if Iris was on that one but I pushed the negative thought behind for once listening to Jude about keeping a clear head he didn't want to die and I sure as hell didn't want to either. Most of our squadron managed to escape but there were the unlucky few, flashes of the event played over and over in my mind how the aircraft looked like a screwed up piece of paper mutilated limbs sticking out of it, bodies splayed messily across the blood decorated rocks; how the evening sunset reflected within the lifeless eyes. All of it.
The air was fresh as it swirled through the maze of nose buds, breeze softly flicked at the curls of hair that had long sprung from my tight bun. closing my eyes I breath trying to grasp what has just happened and how the world can be this alive when the others were so dead.
"Lyra, you okay?" Tyler implores inducing Jude's eyes to find my own."Yeah" I utter like I'm trying to convince myself Jude's eyes began to look concerned. I don't know why but being outside of the walls seemed to change things and it wasn't bad it was kind of relieving.
If iris heard me say that she'd think I'd Been brainwashed and would probably faint knowing how dramatic she is."There!" a girl professes pointing to a cave like entrance. "Good work, guys this way!" Jude calls. We all begin to trek with our aching feet.
Jude enters and disappears into the darkness after telling us to wait outside. After a few minuets he reappears. "Well guys I believe Sarah has found our shelter for the night." he exclaims a smile splitting his face into two. his words causing us to cheer Sarah squealing as the guys pick her up placing her on their shoulders. Once again Jude's eyes found mine and his smile grew into a boyish grin then he looked down breaking the eye contact looking back up with settled lips.
Like he was trying to figure out... why the sudden change of heart?

I sit silently at the opening of the cave.
Looking back I observe the reflection of the orange flames keeping us warm dance against the cave walls. The entirety of the squadron lay on the rugged floor in peace their eyes slowly drifting closed. I'm on first watch I volunteered after a long quarrel with Jude but he knew I wasn't going to let up so he just gave up.
Gawking up at the dark blue sky filled with shimmering stars tears begin to leave my eyes." I could really use your terribly witty jokes right about now." I chuckle with a tint of sadness. I knew he obviously wasn't going to answer but...that didn't matter. "Life is so crazy: I've seen things I never thought I ever would, done things I never imagined and its so surreal." I whisper.
"So have I." A familiar voice inquired causing me too scream. I turned around to face the presence that was standing behind me. " Jude what the hell is wrong with you? you cant do that to people!" I rushed. He smirked down at me before taking a seat beside me."I told you if you were in my situation you'd react in the same way." he said humour tingling within his voice. "Whatever, what are you doing up anyway?" he eyes me with curiosity. "I will answer your question if you answer mine first." he waits for my retort "I recall me asking you first..." I say "Couldn't sleep, couldn't get those images of earlier today out of my mind its like there branded on to my brain." he said looking down at his fingers then back up looking out to the mountains his green eyes sparkling in the moon light I swear they couldn't decide between blue or green they'd change every time I'd see him. "Now." he said "For my question...who on earth were you talking to?" he askes furrowing his brows "No one on earth." I retort he looks at me as if to say 'really lyra?' "Teagan." he smiles understandingly. " I used to do that to when my parents died it was my way of coping. " he mutters in a soft accent. "Look at the stars they're so beautiful its odd how every thing up there has remained the same whereas everything down hear has gone to shit." he looked at me and laughed. "That's one way off wording it." "I'm serious its crazy I feel like I haven't once stopped to look back. I don't think anyone has." silence lingered "No I know. I haven't either. I've just gotten on with things we have to forget our humanity if were ever going to get through this." in some way's I disliked the words 'forget our humanity' but there was some truth within them. I nodded in understanding.
