Heat and different food scents hit me as I stepped in the kitchen. I immediately felt a pinch of nausea but kept a straight face. At least it took my mind off what happened earlier.
There were a few maids in their uniforms lined up waiting on a large built woman who was counting the food on large shiny silver trays. She seemed eager to get some herself. Although I felt slightly sick, the scent of the food kept me aware and made my mouth water.
"Well nice to see you again Elizabeth". Aunty Jean smiled as she approach me wiping her hands in her apron. She seemed more chirpy than before. Before I could greet her she gave me another lung squeezing hug.
"You feel so cool and soft." She let go. "Now what brings you here?" She rested her hands on her hips.
" I wanted to finish Gracey's snow cone" I held up the cup to show her.
She swayed gracefully to the big cupboards. She pulled out a bag with small white bags out of a drawer, took a straw from the straw rack, placed two flavored syrups beside them and a cup of water. She stepped aside and waited for me to come.
After finishing the snow cone I smiled, thinking of how happy Gracey will be. I turned to see aunty Jean and Kevin looking at me.
"C'mon you two. It's lunch time and I'm starving" aunty Jean gestured to the door. "Kevin you know the way. Oh and Elizabeth" I turned to see a genuine smile on her face" Thanks for crushing the ice. You've been a big help to Josh and the rest of us"
My heart swelled with gratitude." It was nothing" I said waving it off.
My stomach made a small growl, which made both Kevin and aunty Jean laugh. I blushed and looked down embarrassed.
" Let me make something special for you, Elizabeth". Aunty Jean looked at me," You deserve it"
I was completely fine but as I opened my mouth to tell her, she cut me off," Go get Gracey her snow cone. Go on. I'll let Kevin give it to you when you're done."
I nodded and headed to the door. Before I reached it I heard Kevin speaking," Aunty Jean why don't I get something special? I was there too".
I giggled. He sounded like a 6 year old.
"You don't need one"
"But-" was all I heard before closing the door.
The minute I stepped out the door I felt better and remembered that I didn't know where the dining hall was. I groaned then took a deep breath.
I can do this. Just focus on the sound of the children.
It only took a short walk in a passage until I found a room echoing with noise. A maid exited the room, gave me a frustrated look and walked away. I felt my heart picking up pace as I turned the knob. I pushed the door and marveled at the sight of all the children.
Look at them. Even though they don't have a blood family, they're all happy with the people who takes care of them.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
"Elizabeth?"
I froze then quickly wiped the tear away. I glanced down at Gracey who was looking a bit sad. I smiled and stooped down to her. She placed her small hand on my face and stared in my eyes.
"Are you alright?"
"Yea. I'm just overwhelmed to see so many or- children so happy". And they should be. I smiled again reassuring her that I'm fine.
I slowly bring the snow cone into view. After I handed it to her, she jumped up and down, repeatedly saying snow cone.
I let out a satisfying laugh. I started to feel my chest burn me again but I didn't pay it any attention. My eyes were fastened on Gracey's smiling face as she enjoyed her snow cone.
If only I could always feel that way.
