You sit down across from Jack and smile, spotting his nervous behavior. After watching his eyes dart around the room for a moment or two, you grab his hand, forcing him to look you in the eye. Without having to look, you pull out your phone and send a message to Jack. "Hey, what's wrong?"

"I'm just... nervous. I've never done this before."

"Jack it's fine, there's nothing to be nervous about."

"I'm worried though."

"Why?"

"I don't want you to have trouble because you're hanging out with a deaf idiot."

"Jack you're not an idiot! You can play the drums without hearing anything! Idiots can't do that."

Jack sets down his phone and sighs, his head hanging low. You send him another text. "Speaking of which, how do you play the drums?"

Jack picks up his phone again and slowly begins to type, seemingly in thought. "I don't know exactly. I guess it's because I can feel the beat. I can feel the music. Does that make any sense?"

You nod, rubbing circles on the back of Jack's hand. "Yeah, I understand. That's... amazing."

He smiles at you before sending another text. "Thanks. You and Mark seem to be the only ones that think so."

"I'm sure there are other people Jack, you just haven't met them yet."

He sighs and looks out the window. Suddenly an older woman walks up to the table you and Jack were sitting at. "Can I help you Ma'am?" you ask politely.

"Yes, I couldn't help that you and, I assume your boyfriend, were conversing through text. You two should pull your heads out of phones for once and actually talk face to face like normal people."

You glance at Jack just as his eyes flick towards you. "I'm sorry Ma'am, but that's the only way we can talk. You see, he's deaf, and I don't know a lot of sign language. This just makes it easier to converse with him."

You watch as her eyes widen. "Well you shouldn't be with someone like him, you could do so much better. Like find someone who can actually appreciate you instead of just think about themselves."

You clench your free hand, pushing down the temptation to yell at the women. "He isn't selfish. He wouldn't have asked me to come to dinner if he was."

Much to your relief, a waiter approaches your table and asks the women to go sit with her group. After letting out an annoyed huff, and giving you a glare, she stomps away. You thank the waiter, who then takes you and Jack's order.

You poke at your food, still slightly ticked at the women. Jack picks up his phone and sends you a text. "What did she say?"

"Nothing Jack, it's fine."

"Y/n. What did she say?"

"Jack please, I don't want to talk about it."

"Y/n, tell me."

You grip the edge of your seat. "Jack please! Don't worry about it!"

His eyebrows furrow. "Fine... I'm sorry."

You nod and grab his free hand. "It's fine."

The two of you finish your meal without another text to each other, only conversing when you ask for Jack's address so you could drop him off. And again when you said goodnight. You make sure he makes it inside before you drive off, letting out a frustrated sigh. "The nerve of some people," you mutter.

You nearly slam the door behind you, remembering at the last second that Felicity would kill you if you slammed it. Groaning from exasperation, you trudge into your room and flop face first onto your bed. Alli comes in minutes later and sits next to you, softly rubbing your back. "What's wrong?"

"I went to dinner with Jack."

"And that's a bad thing? Is he actually a jerk?"

"No," you mumble, "he's really nice, but... why are people so mean!?"

"Y/n?" Alli's voice was riddled with concern. "What happened?"

Sighing, you sit up and run your fingers through your hair. "Some random, lady came over and was really rude. It just pissed me off, especially thinking about how inconsiderate people can be."

Alli nodded. "Yeah well... do you now understand why I like staying inside all day?"

You raise an eyebrow at her. "Says the one who wanted to go to the club."

She glared at you. "Might I add, it was so you could find a guy to hook up with?"

Alli pushes you, making you laugh. "What did the women say?" Alli asks.

You groan, flopping onto your side. "Basically, she was telling me I could do better when it comes to having a boyfriend."

"That _!"

"Alli, it's fine. Don't worry about it."

Alli nods before stretching and standing up to leave your room. "Okay well, I'm going to bed. Goodnight."

You smile and wiggle under the blankets. "Goodnight Alli."

After she leaves, you are left staring the ceiling, still thinking about the undesirable conversation from dinner.
