War zone

What's it like to live in a war zone
Knowing that you could be shot down any minute
But you cannot seem to untangle ur feet from the roots you were born into
We devour our dignity when we have no food to eat
We are ashamed of the world when we have to die knowing no one came to help
I could die a million deaths but it will never overcome watching a child die of hunger.

What's it like living in a war zone they ask
It's walking on the bones of your people fearing the ground will take you next
It's having a funeral with no body
It's having a map tattooed on your bare skin but still can't find the way home
It's having to bury what's left of your brothers body
It's looking for the rest of him when the sun comes up
It's watching your neighbor hold her dead child for three days straight
Rocking back and forth with him in her arms
waiting for God to take her next
It's having to stay so strong that you age 10 years in the time it takes for a reporter to take your picture
20 years by the time the picture gets liked
30 years by the time someone shares it with the HASTAG #prayforpalestine which is code for "look at me I'm giving attention to a broken country but won't actually do something to help "
Living in a warzone drains everything from you
It breaks you
You know you will never be the same after you have seen a child cry for 2 days straight because he can't move his legs
After you have seen his mother  beg for God to take her so that she dosnt have to live there one more minute
After you have seen it all
You can't ever be the same
Living in a war zone
Is having every bullet
Every knife
Every bomb
tear right through you but you don't bleed
Instead you grief
Your legs grief the land they have lost to war
Your arms grief the children
Your skin griefs the sun
That's still their but is no longer shining
as if God took it
And put it in his back pocket
But the worst part of living in a war zone
Is having to watch your body, your mothers body
your sisters body
your brothers body
quiver and break
It's being reborn everyday only to watch yourself die but You don't truly die in a war zone
Because not even death can escape it.
