Chapter Six

Sam had begun to watch the hill early the next morning. She knew the kid with the hockey stick that was saved by the flare was the same one she and her friend had saved back in the woods. Though it had been a month since then, she wasn't shocked to see that he was still alive. She looked up to the branches above her, where her friend had slept, and saw he wasn't there. He went to go look for the lab, which the two of them had woken up in and escaped from. For some reason, they just couldn't seem to find it again...

I remember waking up to everyone else up and moving around. Aaron was heating soup for breakfast, Axel was doing inventory on food and water, and Dominic was practicing wielding a metal baseball bat that he must've grabbed when this whole event started. I started to sit up and winced. The cramping pain in my side shot up and down and it felt like I was struck with a hammer. I fell back down onto my pillow and looked at the guys. I must not have made any noise, because they paid no attention to me.

I took this time to just relax and catch my breath. I had been actively running away from Xombies that I hadn't had much time to just sit and relax. Even that month that I stayed inside the hideout Axel and I made, my days were filled with pacing, crying, and violently hitting the walls... and then there was me falling off the tree. That's probably why I'm in so much pain right now. I'm pretty dumb.

As I was having my recollection of things that have been going on, a bowl of potato chowder was placed by my head. It smelled delicious and it smelled like home. I looked up to see Axel standing over me smiling. "Eat up," he said and plopped down next to me. I started to sit up, and there was still pain in my side but it was manageable. I started to eat the soup slowly, one spoonful at a time. It was perfect, to say the least. To be cooked at a time like this, shows that Aaron must have some real skill at cooking.

"Thanks," I said as I gulped some of it down. I looked at him and smiled back at him, like he was smiling at me. His dark brown/gold curly hair reflected the fire that was burning not too far away.

"You're welcome. Just because we were rivals in school doesn't mean we have to be now," he reassured and put his hand on my shoulder with a couple of pats, then let it glide back down to his lap. "It's funny; I could've sworn you wouldn't have made it. How did you stay alive this past month?"

I looked at him with a chuckle and replied with "I thought you were dead too actually."

"What made you think that?"

"Because I took refuge in the hideout you, me, and my dad made when we were both kids." He burst out laughing after that. He was on his back, laughing so hard his face turned red and it got to the point where he wasn't even making any noise anymore.

"You stayed in that for a whole month? Dude, that's crazy. Now I'm even more shocked that you are alive." He was able to recollect himself and took deep breaths, then a sigh. "Well look, I came over to give you these," he stood as he through a little white bottle of pain killers on my lap. "Take those and after it kicks in, you should be able to move around. Now eat up." Then he went back to his bedroll and pulled out a Calvin and Hobbes comic book. I continued to eat my soup and take the medicine. Now it was time to just sit and wait.

"Did you find it?" Sam asked abruptly as her friend climbed the tree they were hidden in.

"No, but I found ammo for the guns we have, and some good rocks to sharpen our swords. Any news on the "Hill" billies?" he questioned back, emphasizing air quotes around "Hill".

"Nothing yet... They haven't even left the hill today, which tells me that they must have a good amount of supplies, so they should be fine. Do you really think we need to keep watching them at this point?"
