Tris
The silence of the air fills my ears as we ride to what seems like my impending doom.
Tobias has been kidnapped. I know I shouldn't hold on to any hope but I can't help but wonder. Maybe this is why he didn't come back for me. Maybe he has forgiven me these past months but could never tell me...
All of this is my fault. Everything is falling apart. I should've just married Peter when I had the chance. Tobias warned me about his father and Christina warned me about not marrying Peter. Ugh! Why don't I listen to anyone! I'm so hard-headed!
"Beatrice"
I'm snapped out of my thoughts by Caleb.
"Sorry Caleb, I kinda went to my own little world."
"This must be a shock to you. Everything is happening so fast and I hate that I can't protect you from it." He puts a hand on my thigh.
"Caleb, I know I said I had an idea...but I really don't have a plan to save Tobias. I'm afraid that Marcus and Dauntless have teamed up. I was warned about a war. If it comes to be true, I need to know whose side you're on." I look deeply into his eyes.
"Beatrice, you should know that I will be on the side that's right. And kidnapping Tobias isn't the right way to settle things."
I knew I could count on him. I know Christina said he would team with Dauntless but he's my brother. I should've known he wouldn't betray me like that.
Before I can think of anything else, I doze off and wake in front of my home. I'm back at Abnegation.
"Why am I back here?" I ask but I'm unanswered. No one is here. Why do they keep leaving me in the carriage by myself?
I stretch my thin legs and hop off the carriage. As I look around the courtyard for my brother, I hear a small sound.
It's almost like the ground is shaking. But what could make that possible? The rumbling in my ears are too strong to ignore. The sound then clarifies to stomping. It sounds like an army of men stomping.
I turn my head in many directions trying to find the source of the stomping. My eyes land on something small in the distance. It's dark out so I can't quite make out who but small light posts make it clear that it's an army. They dress in all black with long sticks in their hands. Why would an army of men have sticks? I squint my eyes to look farther down and see rows of men and women.
Looks like 20..., no 25... actually it looks more like 60 people. What could they be doing at abnegation? 4 men in the front point their sticks forward and I see a flash on the side of the sticks.
It's silver and looks engraved in hot iron. That's the symbol of Eaton Works. I didn't know they make sticks. Wait...they don't make sticks.
Those people are pointing their guns this way.
I see a woman holding a basket of bread in her hand and a small child next to her.
There's another flash of light and I hear one loud "POP" noise.
The woman falls to the ground and lies there motionless. A scream comes from the child as his mother lies dead on the ground.
"Beatrice!"
I turn to see my mother running towards me.
"Mom!" She grabs my arm harshly and tries to tug me to the castle door as more shots are being fired.
"Beatrice! Move your feet! We have to get you to safety!" She pulls on my arm but I yank free from her grasp.
"That child's mother has just been shot! I can't leave him!" I speak my last words and run as fast as I can to the child.
It's very difficult with a belly as large as mine but I can't think about that right now. If I don't grab this little boy, his fate will be as unfortunate as his mother's.
"MOMMY! MOMMY!" The child wails loudly.
I reach the child and kneel before him while he cries for his dead mother.
"Hey! It's going to be alright! Look at me okay?" I coo to him.
He tried to stifle his crying so he can hear me.
"What's your name?"
"John"
"Okay John, my name is Tris. It's not safe here right now so I need you to come with me okay?"
John begins to cry again. "But what about my mom?"
"You're mom is just sleeping okay? She's safe right there while she sleeps."
"I'm not dumb! I'm almost eight!" John holds up eight fingers. "I know she's dead!"
The shooter get closer and their shots get more precise. A bullet hits the ground next to us.
I close my eyes. It's sad that the young know so much. "Yes John, your mom is dead."
"Beatrice! You've got to hurry! They're getting closer!" My mother shouts in he distance.
Tears rapidly run down John's face. "And we're going to die too!"
I shake my head. "No. No, we're not going to die. But we have to get out of here. Do you see that woman right there?" I turn around and point to my mother. He nods in response.
The shots get louder as they get closer to us.
"That's my mommy. She's going to help you so I need you to run to her as fast as your legs can go. Can you do that for me?"
He nods and rubs his tearful eyes.
"Okay hurry and go." I give him a little nudge and he takes off towards my mother.
I lift myself up and take off as well. Not as fast as the little boy but I run quick.
My mother holds out her hand to me and I shoo it away and tell her to take John inside.
She's reluctant but grabs John's hand and runs to safety inside the castle. I'm close to approaching the doors when I feel something close to a dagger stabbing my shoulder.
I fall to the ground and land on my stomach. Something shifts inside me and I gasp for air. I quickly roll on my back, ignoring the stabbing pain in my shoulder and rub my belly to soothe the baby.
I got shot in my shoulder...again.
Shots continue to be fired as I lay on the ground. I can't move. Something happened in my stomach that's preventing me from moving my legs.
Christina warned me about this. I should've listened.
Dauntless has started a war against Abnegation.
Sorry I took so long guys. I started my job and I'm pretty tired but I promised i would update soon so here you go. War has started. Who will fall victim of Beatrice's choices?
