THE RIGHT MISTAKE
My clear blue eyes met his glowing green eyes the moment he stepped into sight. Even through the bustling crowd of different people from different places meeting their loved ones, my eyes found his in a heartbeat. He started to push past the mob to get to me. A single tear leaked, equivalent to all the tears I've ever let fall. I spun away, vanishing into the flurry of people, leaving him behind.
Part One
"Quickly and quietly. Get out before they can see you." Conner stated all business. He is about 46, or so. He wouldn't tell me precisely how old he is now that the sides of his head are more salt and pepper than just pepper. Conner is just about the only father figure man in my life. I stuffed the weapons he handed me into a duffel bag.
"Yes sir." I smiled confidently. "In. Out." I slung the duffel bag over my shoulder and stepped into the black sedan. Conner climbed inside and once again showed me the picture of Dmitry Kropotkin, Russian mafia man. I waved the picture away and tapped the driver on the shoulder. We took off toward the bad side of town. Kropotkin has a long and gruesome scar starting from the right side of his forehead down to the corner of his mouth. The man is accountable for dozens of bad things, ranging from sex trafficking to killing his own uncle. The things in between made me bite my tongue and clench my fist. The money for his elimination was more than any of my previous operations, and with Connor, finally getting Kropotkin was personal and it would give closure to countless people. So naturally I just had to ensure this mission.
I crouched down to get my gun prepared, then laid belly down on the base. I was up on the top of an abandoned office block. It had a flawless view of the building Dmitri was hiding in. Thank god it had windows. The team divided into two squads, Temple and Whittaker. There was a couple of guards, smoking cigarettes and talking animatedly about sports below, and security cameras scanning the limit of Dmitri's building. I'm not in the perimeter of his building actually, because I was next door on the rooftop. Which is actually quite chilly for late summer - My all black North Face and Bullhead black jeggings wasn't exactly doing the job of keeping me warm - but the sun was down of course.
My walkie-talkie crackled,
"Temple, he's in sight, heading towards your side."
"Roger that. Sniper ready." I propped up the sniper. This assassination of Dmitri would go Kennedy style. Looking through the telescope, I glimpse Dmitri through one of the windows, entering his office.
"I'm in position." I waited for him to line up to the red laser . . . now. Two things occurred after the instant my fingers squeezed the trigger. One, I heard a shout from below which was most likely one of the guards finally detecting there was a whole setup stories above them. The second thing was that glass shattered and Dmitri Kropotkin crashed to the floor, with my bullet lodged in his head.
A crackle from the walkie-talkie and the whole team was congratulating me. My heart was beating fast as I rushed to stuff the evidence of my existence being here into my duffel bag. I hitched the bag over my shoulder and sprinted to the fire escape, because I heard lots of pounding footsteps going up the stairwell. Clambering down the fire escape, the walkie-talkie in my ear crackled.
