On The Run

Chapter 5

I jumped backwards, pulling Caroline with me, still staring at the face that looked at me through the window. I couldn't see much of the persons face except for their eyes; they were a dim blue, almoast gray. I snapped my fingers and a small flame hovered above them, I inched toward the window holding my hand in front of me. The persons face slowly came into vew but once I came close enough to get a good look they disappeared; though I had been able to see that she was a girl, about my age perhaps. Caroline's gaze switched from me to the window a few times "what do we do now?" She asked "go in." I said simply "why?" She looked at me unsure "there's food and someone to help us out" I answered, and, without waiting for a reply from her walked inside.

It wasn't completely dark inside unlike everywhere else in town right now and now that I was inside I could here the buzzing of a generator. I let the fire burn out at my fingertips and continued through the dim store. There was actual food on the shelves and the coolers still had drinks inside; I could have taken it if it weren't for the girl that I had been at the window across the store. "Hey" I called to the girl, hoping she could hear me "come out please, we need some help, we just got here and need food." I looked around to see if I could see her but there was no movement. I stayed silent for a few moments, listening for any sign of her still there. "You aren't allowed here" a small voice finally came from the dark shadows in the corner of the store "this place is mine.". I moved toward the voice slowly and snapped and once again there was a dancing flame at the end of my fingers. I saw the girl clearly now, cowering in the corner and her hands were over her face "don't hurt me" She begged "I need the food too." She added in a quivering voice. I looked at her; she was basically a stick figure, she was so skinny and her deep red hair looked like she had chopped it with a knife. "I wouldn't hurt you" I reassured her "we just need help to find some food, my sister and I." I nodded over to my sister though she couldn't see. She looked up with a sunken face at me then my sister and back again "you won't hurt me?" She asked "no." I answered. She sat up a bit straighter "you still can't be here or take anything from me" She said her voice more aserting but still had a slight meekness to it "but I can show you where to get some food" She finished a bit hesitantly. I nodded "thanks" I said grateful for her help and looked over at Caroline she nodded showing that she was ok with this.

The girl took us a few blocks down the road from the store she had taken shelter in and stopped in front of a small drug store it looked like. "A boy was taken by PSF's a while ago, this was his place, as far as I know no one has taken anything from here so it's yours now" her voice shook a bit as she spoke about the boy. "Did you know him?" I asked "I don't mean to pry though." I added quickly "yes." She said simply and I decided to leave it at that. "Thank you." I said and smiled a bit "It's a real help." Caroline added in and the girl nodded, turned and briskly walked away.

Caroline and I had instantly went inside the old drugstore and were surprised to see how much was left over; pill bottles lined the back wall of the pharmacy and the shelves were pretty well stocked. "Grab a weeks worth about and we can head back to the house" I told Caroline "why don't we just stay here?" She asked and looked up at me "throw some matresses and stuff into the back of the pickup.". I considered this, it could definatly work and we would be able to know if someone came in a tried to take something. "Ok" I said after pondering the suggestion "we have to work fast though I don't want anyone to see and follow us" Caroline nodded her understanding and we both put the food down and went to walk out and begin our move into the store.
