On The Run

Chapter 11

The tires screached and the girls smashed against the glass as I took a sharp turn into an old gas station. Caroline looked at me once I had parked the truck diagonally across three parking spots. "Ok, one, no one else is here and two, need to go the washroom, and I'm guessing you and her need to as well" I answered her unasked questions. She sighed but still nodded. "Cut her loose for me" I said, casting a side glance at our third passenger in the back; she nodded again. I smiled bore sliding out of the vehicle and towards the store leaving Caroline to deal with our recently rescued princess.

Caroline reached into the glove compartment and pulled out her knife that was firmly clasped into its holster. She then closed it and jumped out of the front passenger seat of the tall truck and open the door to the back seat behind her. "If I cut these you won't run will you?" She asked with her hand on the handle of the knife. "I can't make any promises, that girls insane" She said with a hint of disgust in her voice, though mostly fear. "Well 'that girl' is my sister and she happened to save your life" Caroline said matter-of-factly "so maybe show some gratitude, cause she could of said to hell with it and we would be back there eating like queens but she chose to save your sorry ass." She spat at the girl. The girl just stared at her, her face stern and hard. "I'm going to ask you again; if I cut your restraints off will you run?" She looked at the girl matcher her stone hard look of hatred. The girl gave in "no." She answered as she looked down at her bound feet. Caroline smiled "great, at least we are getting somewhere" She said pleased and cut off the zip ties and rope that kept her from moving much. The girl flung her hands forward and rubbed her wrists "thanks." She mumbled. "No problem." Caroline said then closed the door and returned to her seat up front. "One other thing" Caroline said turning around to face the girl "what's your name?" She asked and turned her head to the side slightly "as I guess you know I'm Caroline, I'm ten so I don't have an ability like my sister yet, her name is Kodah, she's 15 and I guess you know her ability." She smiled. "Yeah" the girl answered. Silence fell upon the two girls after that until she decided to answer. "I'm Liz, Yellow, fourteen turning fifteen in month and a bit." She responded while still looking at her feet. "Awesome." Caroline smiled again "nice to meet you, Liz."

I ran my hands down my shirt to get the small bit of dirty water off of them as I walked over to the truck. The door screached when I opened the rusty door and the two girls starred at me when I popped my head in as if they had seen a ghost. I smiled "I suggest you go now or or forever hold your pee" I said and chuckled a bit at my joke. The girls didn't find it all that amusing it seemed, they just rolled their eyes and hopped out of the truck and went for the washrooms. "Well I thought it was funny" I mumbled, took my seat behind the wheel and grabbed the torn map from the glove department. I had no idea where to go from here, we were somewhere around the border of Virginia and West Virginia so if we kept heading straight from here we would eventually make it to Ohio. 'That could work' I thought and nodded before tracing out a route on the map with my index finger. It took me a few tries to find the fastest route there that I was happy with, but I did and right as the girls got back too. I looked back at them "alright so I figured out where we are heading next." I said and pointed at Ohio in the top right corner of the map.
"Ohio?" Caroline looked at me and I nodded.
"It's pretty far, we could just go to West Vergingia." She said looking down at the map.
"I know but I thought sinse she-" I pointed at the girl
"It's Liz." She said simply before I could continue.
"Ok, Liz is with us we should go further; stay away from the Skiptracers." I said and silence fell upon the car. I cleared my throught "Well, assuming she stays with us" I added. They both nodded and Caroline crawled into the back seat with Liz and I could hear them wispering to each other soon after. I sat silently as they had their silent conversation and tapped my foot on the break pedal for the long while they were back there together.

About twenty minuets later I felt Caroline come back over the seat and I turned to her as she took her usual seat beside me. "So... What are we doing then?" I asked and Caroline looked back at Liz.
"I'm coming with you guys." Liz said from the back seat "if that's ok with you" She added shyly after.
"Yeah" I said and smiled "I'm perfectly fine with that" I said and laughed "welcome aboard!" I said, turning to face her and then back to the road. I then started the engine and began to pull out of the parking lot and onto the empty freeway. And for the first bit of the drive I felt the two girls unamused looks on my back and side as I went along smiling.
