Lee was in Ireland and I was still homeless. She said I wasn't to worry about it, whatever that meant. I got out of bed at seven, early by my standards, and started searching for apartments. Dad had said his offer for me to stay at home with him still stood, but something about being home, my Irish home, was just as depressing as being in my New York apartment. It was eleven and I still had no success in finding a place. I didn't want to pay too much because I didn't know how long I'd be in Ireland for, and I wanted to live comfortably at the same time. I didn't know if I wanted one in the country or the town. The town would be the more sensible choice of the two because it would be closer to the store, but at the same time I loved the country. In confusion, I shut down the computer and decided I'd do it some other time.
I took a shower and got dressed, Lee wanted to have lunch at some coffee shop. I texted her I was on my way and hopped in the jeep. Dad 'rented' me the jeep for a couple weeks till I could get my own vehicle but we both knew he wouldn't take a cent from me.
Not much had changed here, I thought as I drove to the shop . The same people I'd left here in the shops when I was a schoolgirl were still here, the same trees, same roads. My phone vibrated in my pocket.
"Hey I'm just around the corner."
Heavy breathing was heard on the line.
"Lee?"
The tone.
What the fuck? I tried redialling the number but the person didn't pick up. I dialled Lee. She picked up on the first ring.
"Chris I'm in the shop waiting on you, should I order your usual?"
"Yeah, do that. Quick question, did you just call me on another number?"
"No, why would I do that?"
"Oh, nevermind then"
I hung up, turning into the driveway of the coffee shop. I only had to walk a couple steps in before seeing Lee's bright eyes through the window. I grinned waving to her. She rose and ran out to hug me.
"Chris!" She smashed into me and a rush of nostalgia swept me off my feet as I smelled her hair.
"Hey! I've missed you."
"Did you really?" she scrunched her eyes, looking up at me.
"Yes" I grinned.
Her hand still around me, we walked into the shop. I saw a baby in one of the baby stool things beside the table she saved for us.
"Lee?"
"Yaahh, let's get chitty chatty! I have sooooo much to tell you!"
My smile widened.
"Are you going to introduce me to your baby or not?"
Jack, I think, was staring at me with such interest I couldn't help feeling he knew all my secrets.
"You can hold him if you want." She unbuckled the straps around Jack.
"Pfft, as if I need YOUR permission." I lifted Jack from his seat. "Hi, I'm Christina. You can call me Chris for short though. Nice to meet you." I shook his tiny hand and he continued staring with the same interest.
"You're still as retarded as ever aren't you? Lee sighed.
I grinned, putting Jack back down.
I slid into the seat and look a proper look at Lee. She was still the same shining, bubbly girl I'd left here years ago.
"Where's your husband?"
"Oh, Josh, he's back home." She looked away.
"Is everything good between you two?"
