Mum left the following week. To say the departure was awkward would be a lie. The departure was very awkward. Considering the fact that she couldn't look me in the eye.
Lee's friend, Chris, came over with all her stuff last night. I wasn't pleased with the living arrangements. I didn't know her, she made me uncomfortable. She was staying in Lee's room but I couldn't help the curiosity that sparked in me every time I heard them laugh.
"Lylah get the hell up, we're going shopping!" Lee's loud mouth rang from the other side of the door.
I forced myself upwards, my mind instantly running on mum and if she was okay. The floor was cold, and it was raining outside. Why did Lee want to go shopping on a day like this? I wanted to stay in bed. That and, I must admit, a bit of nervousness churned in my stomach at the thought of being around her little friend. After my shower I went downstairs and saw them sitting in the couch, already dressed.
They looked up at me and I focused my eyes on Lee.
"Breakfasts on the counter."
I nodded, going to the kitchen.
"I'm thirsty." Chris got up, following me. My stomach bubbled.
I sat on the stool, pouring milk and eating the scrambled eggs I saw in a covered plate. She opened the fridge taking water out. I allowed myself to steal a glance. She was sexy, I must admit. Her hair was up in a ponytail and she was wearing sweatpants and a tube top. I felt my face heat up at the thought of what it must be like to touch her. She spun around and I stared at my eggs intently.
"I made those."
I looked up at her brown eyes.
"The eggs?"
"Yah." She leaned on the counter. "How are they?"
"Good" I gave a small smile, stuffing a forkful in my mouth. She smiled back at me and I was never happier for Lee to interrupt.
"Ready yet?" she came in with Jack on her side. Jack, as young as he was, had a thing for Chris. She took him from Lee and I couldn't help smiling at how cute he was.
"He likes you." I said to her.
She grinned at me.
I don't know how, or why, I was related to Lee. We came to the mall to buy two pairs of clothes for Jack. TWO. How we ended up with six bags, was beyond me. Each time I would start getting a bit miserable though, I'd catch Chris looking at me amusedly, and I'd adjust my mood. The day went by slowly. We finally, landed in a lingerie store. How? I don't know. Why? I really don't know. Lee had gone back to the car with Jack, saying she' be back in a couple minutes cause he needed to be fed, leaving Chris and I in the store. She sat down in the front area and I stood, not really sure of my next move.
"Aren't you going to try anything on?" she asked, a glimmer in her eyes.
"Aren't you?"
"I mean, I could"
I felt my mouth open a little then close.
"No, I'm not trying on anything."
"Why not?"
"Why aren't you?"
"You know that's not exactly how you answer a question."
I smiled.
"Because I don't need any."
"Well don't you wanna spice up your relationship?"
I took a direct look in her eyes, to see if she was teasing me, but she seemed serious.
"I'm not in one."
She nodded.
"And if I was in a relationship, I wouldn't need lingerie to 'spice it up'"
"What would you use then?" she cocked her head to the side.
"Isn't love enough?"
"I suppose. If you're in love. But it doesn't help to try a little something new.."
My curiosity peaked.
"Aren't you gonna spice up YOUR relationship?"
She looked amused now.
"I'm not in one either. Although I share the same views as you do on love being enough. When you love someone, nothing else matters. Lingerie helps though"
Nothing else maters. My mind ran on mum, on her way to North Carolina.
At that moment Lee walked in, but even Lee's loud mouth couldn't get my eyes off her.
Odd, how someone can say exactly what you don't want to hear.
