The next day, I returned to school wearing the clothes I had bought the previous day. In my opinion, I didn't look too bad, but that was not the case for the rest of the school. The school was buzzing with rumors and insults.
"What the hell is she wearing?"
"I heard that she's devastated from the breakup. Serves her right, she shouldn't have dumped him."
"I think she's going insane."
Personally, the last one was my favorite. As sad as it was, the rumors and insults were not optional if I wanted to become unpopular.
At least it was working. People who were lower on the inevitable food chain of high school approached me more and weren't as afraid to talk to me.
However, just as things were starting to go my way, something went wrong. Of course it did.
Jake came up to me at Kari and my lunch table and said, "Can we talk?"
"What do you want? I asked impatiently. Just as I was about to descend the totem pole of popularity, Jake approached me. Just being seen with him would raise me up. If you were seen with him, you would go from a nobody to a somebody in the snap of a finger.
"I just want to talk. Alone.", he said in a strange voice. Something seemed off about him.
"No.", I responded, quite bravely of I might add, when he leaned down and said into my ear so that no one would hear.
"You're coming with me. I know all about your little crush on nerd boy."
Not wanting my crush to be revealed, I immediately obeyed him. It would be the most humiliating thing in the world if he found out. I followed him out of the cafeteria and into the hallway.
"Scram." He said in a threatening voice to all the students in the hallway. Of course, they obeyed, because Jake was like a shark and the rest of the people were like little, tiny fish that the shark would eat for breakfast.
"I know you still have feelings for me." He said, very arrogantly in my opinion.
I scoffed. "As if. The amount of feelings I have for you is equal to the amount of feelings I have for a dead fish. There is not a chance in hell that I would ever get back together with you."
"Oh yeah?" He asked. "Prove it."
"Huh?" I replied dumbly, before he did the most selfishly inconsiderate thing that he could do.
He kissed me.
He pinned my arms to the wall so that I couldn't move. I squirmed, trying to free myself from his grip. The kiss was the worst thing that I could imagine. There was no chemistry, and his lips felt awkward against mine.
He pulled away and stared at me. He whispered, "How do you feel now?"
I was about to respond with a string of curse words directed at him, but before I could, someone called out to me.
"Tiffani?"
It was Justin. And by the look on his face, I could tell that he saw everything.
