Everyone has a soul, even if they think they don't have one. A soul is makes you happy or have emotions. A soul is you and without it, you'll look so expressionless. When your born, your soul is fresh and it will reach out and take in whatever emotion it can get in order to grow. It wants to absorb something in order to make the human be who it will turn out to be. A soul will grow, then if you bring it to its max and still grow it, you get a certain kind of magic. Well swords are a great way to take that extra step because if you become one with the blade, you'll be stronger than ever. That's what happened to Kyo after he ran from his burning village to fall upon a tree.
