The Letters

"Oof!" Harry awoke with a start. His best friend, Ron Weasley, had jumped on his stomach.

"Sorry mate," he apologized, "but you've got to get up! We've got letters!"

"Letters?" Harry asked, confused, "Who is giving us letters?" He shoved on his glasses and his best friend's room came into focus. Harry was staying at the Burrow temporarily until... Well he wasn't exactly sure until when. But for the time being, he was sticking with the Weasleys.

They had invited him immediately after the war, but Harry had attempted staying at Grimmauld Place first, but he cracked after a few days. The house was full of painful memories and dust. It was also too quiet in there, with too much time to mourn over the ones they had lost.

    "Hogwarts is!"

It took Harry a second to process what Ron said, "Hogwarts is sending us letters? But we're too old to go back!"

Ron hopped off of his bed, "I dunno mate, all I'm certain of is that there are letters from Hogwarts addressed to us downstairs," his stomach let out a loud growl, "and that I'm hungry. Get up!"

Half an hour later, a clothed and showered Harry, Ron, and Ginny were sitting at the large rickety kitchen table devouring eggs and toast; holding their Hogwarts letters.

"Let's open them," Ginny said after swallowing a mouthful of toast and marmalade. They tore theirs apart.

    Dear Mr. Potter,
We are pleased to inform you that you are one of people who have been accepted to go back to Hogwarts for your final year, since you missed it due to last year's circumstances. It is completely optional, though you will be missed if you do not attend. The supplies list is also enclosed inside the envelope.

I also feel the need to inform you that there will be American students coming to Hogwarts this year. They have just come out of a war themselves and know very little about magic due to some issues with their childhood. More will be explained later. Your supplies are listed in the letter below.  The Hogwarts Express leaves at 11:00 on September 1st. We await your response no sooner than July 31.
                                               -Minerva McGonagall.

Harry read it over three times to make sure he wasn't dreaming. He could go back to Hogwarts! Of course he would accept! Though he wasn't sure what the 'American students' meant. Would it be like when Durmstrang and Beauxbatons came? No, the American schools weren't involved with the Triwizard Tournament. And what was all about them not knowing magic? He showed Ron the letter, as though he might get more than Harry did.

"So do you understand?" Harry asked.

"Shh!" Ron held out his finger, gesturing for silence, "I'm a slow reader!"

About 15 seconds later, Ron looked up from the parchment and returned Harry's questioning look.

"What the bloody hell is this about?" he asked Harry.

"I don't know," Harry admitted, "maybe we should ask Hermione through the Floo Netwo-" his thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the Burrow door.

"Who's that?" Mrs. Weasley asked over the counter, wiping her hands on a rag. "Harry, can you show me your letter?" She asked him politely. Harry handed it to her.

Ron walked over and opened the door, coming face to face with an extremely excited Hermione.

"Did you get the letters too?"

Harry stared at her. Hermione's hair was half brushed and her blue Muggle t-shirt was inside out. She apparently had tried to reach them as quickly as possible.

"Yeah," replied Harry. "Erm, why don't you come in?"

Hermione entered the Burrow and said hello to Mrs. Weasley. She sat down in the chair next to Ginny.

Mrs. Weasley finished reading the letter, "American students? Arthur never mentioned anything about this at the Ministry! Whatever the case, we will have to go to Diagon Alley soon in order to get your supplies for sch-"

Ron cut her off, "Wait, when did we agree to go back?" He asked.

"Well, I assumed everyone wanted to," said Mrs. Weasley, giving Ron a glare. "You seemed awfully excited when the letters came."

"Yeah," Ron replied, "but I didn't know they were asking us to return to school."

"Well what did you expect? For Hogwarts to ask if you wanted a free vacation? You're going, Ronald Weasley. You need to complete your education. That's final." And with that, Mrs. Weasley went back to magically scrubbing the dishes.

Milk, this was short (and yes, I did type milk). At least I have some Harry POV!
