Chapter 3b

My darting speed helped. A lot. I could barely hold onto her sweet scent, at first. Like attempting to grasp onto the thread of a spider web, it was troublesome. But the closer I got, the easier it was. The stronger her captivating scent became. Even with this small victory, I still dreaded to find out where she was going. This path, I felt like I recognised the trees and roads I passed, and I really hoped my instincts were wrong, because surely she wasn't planning to leave again.
The path I currently took, led to an airport. The very same one I had been at, when I first stepped into the thick heat waves of Pennysylvania. I remembered that day very well; a younger, naive version of myself on his first day as a qualified guardian. Who would have guessed I'd turn out so differently from what I had anticipated? Not that it was a bad change. If I had known better, I would have thought differently of myself.
The airport was full of humans, they barely chatted amongst each other. Sleep deprived, their blood-shot eyes seemed to sink into their skulls. Despite their silence, the building shook with life.
Rose had been here, that was for sure. Her scent seemed to have stopped here. Now, she wasn't here, so she really had traveled by plane. The real question was, where? Where did she go? I pulled out my cell phone, and dialled a number. "Boris, tell everyone we're leaving." I ordered, in Russian. "I want them all here in an hour."
"Why?" He dared to ask. "We've barely been here for long." Though his words had been challenging, he spoke with caution. Out of the fear he struggled to conceal.
"I know where she went." I didn't have to specify who I was refering to, he already knew. "You've got an hour."
I told him my location and ended the call. Giving them an hour was harsh, but I needed them now. None of them would dare to disobey, they knew their place well amongst the Strigoi. If they really are concerned about their own survival, they'll be here on time.
That was a perk with being in power, and I now understand how pleasant it felt. The fear implanted into the Strigoi, the fear of me, made everything so easy. I can take what I want, and do whatever I please. A life worth living, no limitations or anyone to stand in my way. The sense of being invincible, it's what everyone truly wants. I'd kill for it.
And I'm not the only one who would, the other Strigoi would too. My strength and status is enough power to stop them, no one's an idiot enough to challenge me. They know I'd end them in a matter of seconds.
The blinding light of the airport forced me into action, I strode over to the building. It was much brighter inside, my eyes stung and I flinched. I paused, allowing my eyes to adjust, before heading straight to the counter. Humans had lined up, waiting for their turn. I pushed past them, ignoring the angered comments of the public, that filled the air.
A security guard lunged forward to stop me, and it took a lot for me to let him. My eyes darted to the woman in charge. Her eye brows furrowed in confusion as our eyes met, and the bright red of mine was visible. Along with my abnormally pale complexion.
"What the---"
"Tell him to let me go." I demanded. I wanted to snap the neck of the weak human clutching my arm, but I didn't want bring too much attention to myself. And it's better for everyone if the humans are oblivious to the existence of the supernatural. They'd just add to our problems.
"Let him go." She instantly replied. The compulsion left her in a dazed state, even when she looked at the guard.
He was the one who now looked baffled at her. Regardless, he obeyed wordlessly. This caused further arguments from the customers. I let out a sigh of annoyance, and turned to the woman again.
"Tell them to shut up."
"Stay quiet, or you're not going any where." That shut them up. They stopped and stared at us, bewildered.
I brought my attention to the surprised guard. "Get them away, and forget this ever happened." It felt good to compel them. I savoured the power it awarded me, even if it was only against humans.
He did as told. The woman sat idle, her eyes wide and watered, trapped in a trance from the compulsion. "Someone used these airlines, in the past twenty-four hours. I need you to find her, Rose Hathaway." I walked over to her side, and scanned the screen. She reached for the computer mouse, and clicked on a few files. After a few seconds, Rose's profile here was on screen.
I scanned the details, and paused when I saw where she actually went. I blinked and moved closer, maybe I had read wrong. Nope, she had boarded a plane to Alaska. That . . . I wasn't expecting. Why Alaska of all places? I may had been right earlier, she had seen my threats to kill her and she responds by going on holiday.
No, that wasn't like her. Not at all. Where the hell was she getting the money to fund her adventures around the world anyway? And what reason compelled her to move away from the safest place, against me in the world? I know she's stubborn, so my plan to hunt her down won't stop her from much. But not stupid. There was a purpose behind everything, I knew that much, I just didn't know what.
"Who else boarded the same plane?" I questioned. She responded by producing a list of names. If Rose knows I'm after her, she must have brought someone with her, atleast. She doesn't know who she's really up against, I don't know who'll help her so it's best I find out. I'll have the upper hand before the fight even begins.
I skimmed through the list and stopped at two names I recognised. It became official, I'm one-hunded percent certain I'd win that fight and live an immortal dream. With that kind of back-up . . . Hell, I could take them all down alone. Eddie Castile and the princess, Vasilissa Dragomir, her company.
The princess, Rose and Eddie. When I had been at the Academy, it was decided that we would be assigned to Vasilissa; me and Rose. The other guardian is most likely my replacement, since the princess has to be with two guardians at all times. If they were taking her out of those protective wards . . . Or maybe it was the Moroi's choice to leave. Though Alaska seemed pretty random. If it really was the princess's choice, Rose should have convinced her not to go, but it seemed as though she was encouraging it.
What surprised me the most was Rose's recklessness. With her own life, she was daring. But to danger a Moroi's, and that being her best friend, what was she thinking? And to have a bloody army of Strigoi after her. We know each other like we know ourselves, she knows I'm true to my word. Like the Royal Court and the caves, she was just making it easier for me. I'd be able to hit two birds with one stone, the princess will be next.
"Delete the last hour's video footage." I commanded to the woman, my eyes landed on the small camera at the top corner. This human's resistance to compulsion wasn't very good, I didn't need to maintain eye contact at all. My gaze flickered to the monitor infront of her and I watched her expertly manage. "Forget this ever happened." My last words before heading towards the exit.
The night was still young, so we'd make it to Alaska before the sun rises. The Strigoi made it here first, since they used their speed to arrive on time. The humans were late, but I spared them. They weren't worthy of the power we possessed, they had come by vehicle, which was much slower than us.
"Alaska." I announced. "We're going to Alaska." Some of them seemed thrilled at the idea, the humans mostly. They would see it as some sort of holiday but for us, it's bussiness.
I continued to explain. "I've no clue as to why she keeps travelling but I'll get her, and then we can return home." They all remained silent, but nodded in agreement. The humans didn't interefere at all, they knew their opinion didn't matter at all.
I turned away from my Strigoi, my army and my power. I glanced the stary night. Alaska . . . Sounds interesting, it's been a while since I visited, I look forward to my time there.
