Ashton

I knew Sarah was falling asleep. I knew she had a hard week, and I thought she deserved the rest.
I drifted off to sleep soon after her, and was woken up by my phone vibrating.
It buzzed on my hand, and I was grateful that it was on silent. The picture showed my sister Charley giving my dad a big wet willie.
      "Hello?" I said tiredly.
"Hey where are you?" Charley demanded.
I didn't know how to respond. "Why?"
"Cause you weren't in your room when mom came in at 8. She's going ballistic. Where are you?"
"Oh." I felt bad. My mom has been different ever since my dad died. "I'm with Sarah."
I heard a sigh on the other end of the line, and I smiled. "That doesn't tell me where you are, monkey butt."
"I'll be home in 30 minutes. Love you." I hung up before she could say anything else.
Sarah stirred in her sleep, mumbling something I couldn't understand and rolled over, and taking all if the blankets.
I knew she was a zombie in the mornings, and I didn't want to face this now, but I didn't really have a choice. My mom would kill me if I wasn't home in the next 30 minutes.
"Hey, Sar-bear." I shook her shoulder. "Wake up."
Sarah sat up opened her eyes, and closed them again. "It's too early." She grumbled, and burrowed herself under the covers again.
      "It's not early, it's like 8:30."
"It is too early." She repeated.
I hoped she wouldn't hate me for this. I took a deep breath, and yanked the blankets off her.
She curled into a tight ball, then sat up, and glared daggers into me. "If we didn't have the relationship we have now, you'd be dead right now."
I put my hands up in surrender. "I know, but I need to drive you home, then be at my place in 30 minutes or so before my mother goes completely crazy with worry."
"Why is she worried? We've been here all night before." She said, grumpily.
"Because I didn't tell her where I was."
Sarah rubbed her eyes. "Okay, okay. Let's go."

"Thanks for the ride," Sarah said as I pulled up to her front door.
"No problem." I said yawning loudly.
"Sleeping is fun." She opened the door.
A thought suddenly popped into my mind.
"Get back in." I said. She looked loke she didn't want to, but closed the door. "Why?"
      "Just do it."
I opened mine, hopped down, and jumped across the bed of the truck to open the door for her.
I extended a hand and helped her down.
"You know you didn't have to do that?" Sarah said laughing.
"Yes I did. I want to be the best gentleman in the universe." I winked.
"Well, Prince Charming, thank you for your service."
I held out my arm and she took it, and I led her to the door.
She gave me a hug, and stretched on her toes to kiss my cheek. "Thanks, Ash." She opened, and with a final wave, closed the door behind her.
I stood there staring at the faded wood of the closed door. My cheek still tingled where she'd kissed it and I didn't know why.
I didn't like her. We were best friends and we'd both agreed that we wanted to keep the relationship the way we have it. I liked having a girl that I could confide in. She was the only person that I truly trusted.
We are nothing more than best friends I said to myself.
I turned around and headed toward my truck. I started the engine and pulled down the street.
