Skylor's POV:

"Skylor?" Carmines voice sounded sleepy. I got up from my chair, and took her hand.

  "Yeah?"

Her eyes were drooping. "you don't have to sit here in during my surgery. I'll be okay. You need to go see Sarah. You've hardly left this place since I was admitted. She's probably thinking I'm a selfish person for keeping you with me." She rubbed her eyes sleepily. "If i find out that you stayed here during this whole thing, I'm going to kick you out."

I laughed. She sat up straighter, slurring her words slightly. "I'm not kidding."

"You should lay back down." I said trying to push her pack into the pillows.

She frowned. "I'm not slurring my words, I'm talking in cursive. Now leave this place before I have you removed, myself."

I rubbed the back of my neck where it was a little stiff from when I dozed in the hospital chair.

She struggled to keep her eyes open, while she turned away from me. "Nurse!"

A woman in purple and green scrubs hurried over. Carmine pointed to me. "Can you make sure that Sky leaves the hospital? He needs to go see his girlfriend that he has hardly seen or talked to since I came here. And I'm putting my foot down."

The nurse looked at me. "Yes, I will."

She looked at me slowly, still struggling against the drugs. "And can you tell Sarah, that I... didn't mean anything to take... away her boyfriend. Tell... her I'm sorry for any harsh feelings I may have caused."

  I nodded.

"Thankssss." Carmine's eyes finally closed, her breathing slowing.

She was wheeled into the operating room, and I stood there waiting for the doors to close.

The nurse came out of the room, and came up to me. "Alright, sir. You heard her.Leave. Go see your girlfriend."

"I was planning on it." I said, heading towards the door. As i head down the hall, I hear footsteps behind me. I glance over my shoulder, to see the nurse following me. Apparently she took her job seriously.

As I walked out the front doors, I sat on a bench, and pulled out my phone, to text Sarah.

<Me> Hey, where are you?

A couple minutes later, she responded.

<Sarah> Hanging out with my dad? Why?

<Me> Cause I want to go on a date.

<Sarah> If you are just going to cancel in 5 minutes, why even bother?

I was taken aback. What did she mean cancel? I thought back to the last few times I'd set up something with Sarah. My stomach felt like lead with guilt. I'd canceled the last five dates with Sarah to be with Carmine even when she didn't need me there.

<Me> I'm not going to cancel. Promise.

<Sarah> You said that last time. why should this one be different?

<Me> Because this one is different. Cross my, heart hope to die, stick a cup cake in my eye.

<Sarah> It's a needle in your eye. Did you say that because you're too scared to get a needle?

<Me> Nah! You wouldn't do that. You're too sweet. just like the cup cake.

I prayed that I didn't have anything come up, and get in the way of my time with her. I knew she was serious, if she was angry enough, nothing would stop her from doing exactly what she threatened to do. except for killing someone. She wasn't that bad.

<Sarah> I don't think so. If you think I'm sweet, than you need to get to know me better.

<Me> And by doing that, I need to take you out on a date with me.

I didn't see the responding bubble for about five minutes, leaving me worried and wringing my hands.

I finally saw her responding, and a flash of relief and anxiety left me on edge. I was a terrible boyfriend, and I needed to spend time with her.

<Sarah> Fine. When?

The breath I didn't realize I'd been holding, came gushing out of my lungs.

<Me> When is good for you?

<Sarah> I'm still with my dad, and he still isn't fond of you so we should do it sometime tonight.

<Me> Does six sound good?

<Sarah> maybe. I'll get back to you. I'm about to go into the movie theater. We're watching the new Civil War!!!!!!!

I smiled at that. I knew Sarah was a big fan of the Avengers, so I let her go with a final "Have fun! Text me when you know if you make it tonight." And my heart could beat at it's normal rhythm again.
