When I wake up, there's a man with a mask bending over me. I start to scream. I don't want him to hurt me. I don't want him to come near me. I start trying to move away from him, kicking my feet and flailing my arms around.
"Shhh, it's going to be ok, I'm not going to hurt you"
I'm not going to hurt you. He says he won't hurt me. I've heard that before though! Daddy said that to me last time we played his game! he said he wasn't going to hurt me, but he did. I hate him. And his friends. I hate boys!
I continue to kick and scream until the man moves back. As soon as he does, I go mute again. I haven't said a word to anyone since I got here. I won't answer their questions. The man leaves and comes back with a girl. I lay there silently while she pokes me with a needle and examines me. She is explaining everything and asking me questions, but I just tune her out completely.
"Sweetie, what's your name?"
She asks me again, and I know that she's not leaving until I answer. I look at her, trying to see if she'll hurt me. Daddy told me never to make eye contact with people. If I ever did, he'd hit me. She has kind eyes.
"I'm not going to hurt you honey, I just want to make you feel better"
She tells me again that she won't hurt me, and this time, I believe her.
"My name is Addelyn" I whisper.
She smiles at me. "What a pretty name. Can you tell me what hurts Addie?" She looks at me with concern. I know she can see my cuts and bruises. Daddy gave them to me when I was bad. I want to tell her, but daddy would always give me more punishment if I told him it hurt.
"It's ok Addie, we're not going to hurt you anymore. We will just put medicine on whatever hurts so that it feels better" She gives me a smile and tells the man behind her to leave. I study her face. She doesn't have that mean look that daddy always had. Slowly, I point to the cuts on my legs, arms, stomach, and back. She nods at me
"Is that all of them?"
I hesitate. Daddy said never to tell. Daddy said he'd hurt me worse if I told anyone. So I slowly nod my head and tell her that yes, that's all that hurts.
