I walked down the stairs with five big bags of mixed candies. I squeezed them under one arm, opening the door with the other. I looked to the five chairs located in front of the open garage. I threw three of the bags inside on the table, pouring two into the large bowl next to it.

"Okay, who's sitting here to pass out candy?" I asked, pointing to the chair at the end of the half circle.

"I guess I will." Joe volunteered, plopping into it and placing his bottle into the cup holder.

Aron sat next to him, Trevor in the middle, then James and I at the opposite end. Our well-trained dogs played with each other in the yard.

I leaned forward, grabbing a stick and moving the fire around to get a better flame.

"Aleks, I got something for us." James said, walking into the garage.

"Oh god, do I even want to know.." I watched him rip open a bag, pulling out two costume bags. He tossed me one, opening his up.

"Ninja turtles? Seriously?" I questioned.

He laughed, nodding. "Yes, don't you love it?"

I opened it, stepping into the costume.

"Wow, you guys look amazing." Joe said, smiling.

"Don't we?" James agreed, pulling me next to him. "Quick, take a picture before he takes it off."

Joe quickly took out his phone, snapping a few pictures. I purposely made my face to look like I absolutely hated my life.

"You guys look fucking stupid." Trevor commented, eating some of the candy.

"Shut up, Trevor. Stop fucking eating the candy." James huffed, receiving the middle finger from the youngest male.

James took his beanie off, placing the eye mask on.

"Trick or treat!" We got our first set of kids of the night. Joe put a couple pieces of candy in each open bag, wishing them a happy Halloween.

"We should scare some kids." James suggested, grabbing out a couple masks.

He threw Aron one that was meant to be a rat, putting on a disgustingly ugly one himself. Aron slipped his on, crouching and walking to the dimly lit sidewalk, hiding in the shadows. He motioned James over, who stood on the other side. As a family walked over they jumped out, growling and snarling. The kids shrieked, hell, even the adults did.

The two began laughing, as did the three of us. James and Aron continued down the sidewalk scaring more people as the family approached us.

"Sorry, guys." Joe chortled, giving them more candy for the inconvenience.

"Holy shit, guys, come with us! There's a fucking haunted house down the next street!" James called from down the road.

I grinned, getting up and walking with James to the haunted house. I haven't been in one of these things in years.

"You ever go in one of these?" James asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, I used to love them."

"Me too." James smiled as we approached the garage, the entrance. Two little boys stood in front of us.

"Hey, did you guys go in this yet?" James asked, pointing.

One of the boys nodded. "Yeah! It's not that scary, though."

"Whoa, are you sure? This looks terrifying!"

I smiled. He's so cute with kids.

The boys laughed. "It is kind of spooky. It's really fun though!"

"Oh, wow. I might need to hold my friend's hand here so I don't get too scared." James laced our fingers together as the four of us entered. We walked through, the floorboards creeking. Something was scratching at the wall.

Or someone. A constant dragging sound was heard from behind us. I was the first to turn around, noticing a woman with long hair covering her face. She screamed, beginning to chase us. I admit, I jumped, and held James' hand tighter. We ran a little bit before she seemingly disappeared.

"Jesus Christ, dude.. At least I got my cardio in for the day.." I mumbled.

James suddenly shrieked, bumping into me as he moved away. "Someone grabbed me! Get me out of here!" He exaggerated, causing the kids in front of us to laugh.

"They're not gonna hurt you!" One said.

"And you guys already went through this? Jeez, you're brave." He said.

We exited the haunted house with James still holding my hand. Instead of going home, he walked to the house next door.

"Trick or treat!" He said, holding out a plastic bag he pulled from his pocket.

"Aren't you a little old to be trick or treating?" The woman at the door said to us, putting candy in the bag.

I laughed, pointing at James to show it was his idea.

"Never too old for free candy." James claimed. "Happy Halloween!" He waved, making his way back to our house, being sure to stop for candy. Surprisingly, a lot of people gave him some. Of course, some didn't.

"Look what I got boys!" James grinned as we approached the house. Our house.

"Ooh, share." Trevor said, holding his hand out.

"Yeah, gimme some." Aron added.

"No, fuck off, it's all mine." He muffled, already eating some of it.

I reached into his bag, pulling out a mini bag of pretzels.

"What? He gets some?" Trevor pointed.

James looked at me, what was in my hands, then back at me. "Yeah, I guess so. What's mine is his."

"Are you guys married now or something?" Aron huffed.

Even in the night light I could see James blush. "No, but still." He leaned back in his chair, holding my hand.

I ignored everything else happening in the world for a moment and just listened to the fire crackling as I stared at James. I smiled and rubbed my thumb across his knuckles.

"What?" He asked quietly, turning towards me.

I shrugged my shoulders, shaking my head. "Nothing. I just love you."
