River's Course (A Short Play)

Scene 2

*a bar, River and her best friend Megan walk in and sit down at the bar. Dylan is the bartender*

Dylan: Hi girls, what can I get... River? River Tuline?

River: Huh? Oh, my god! Dylan? How are you?

D: Im great, thanks! What about you? You look amazing by the way!

R: Oh my goodness! Thank you, haha.

D: So, what have you been up to, m'dear? I've missed you.

R: I've missed you too! And not all that much, to be honest.

Megan: So, River, are you going to introduce me?

R: Oh, Megan this is Dylan, we went to school together.

D: A long lost friendship.

(they look at each other with a shy smile)

M: Uh huh? Ao can you get your long lost friends current best friend a drink?

D: Oh yeah, sure. What'll it be?

M: Bloody Mary.

D: And for you, little miss?

R: Haha, I'll have a malibu and coke please.

D: Not a problem, my dear.

*dylan goes to make the drinks.*

M: So... How's the lover boy?

R: Alex?

M:(sarcastically) No, I mean Ricardo, the pilot from Spain.

R: Very funny. He's fine. Same old shit.

M: You should leave him already! He clearly doesn't make you happy.

R: But, we're in love.

M: (schoughs) Love! Ha! You two are about as much in love as Jocelyn Wildenstein has a chance of winning the next miss universe!

R: Jealous much?

M: Why would I be jealous of a boy like Alex?

*dylan produces their drinks*

D: That'll be £7.55, please.

M:*searching through bag* Oh damn it, Megan!

R: No purse?

M: No purse.

R: I'll get it, it's cool.

M: Thanks, doll.

D: Thanks, hun. *he cashes the money into the till.* So, River, We ought to meet up sometime.

R: We do! Here's my number.

*she passes her phone to Dylan, he quickly scribbled her number on a piece of paper.*

D: Thanks! Anyway, I better get back to work. You girls enjoy your night!

M: (suspiciously) Oh, we will.

*two boys enter and sit just next to the girls at the bar, they order pints*

M: *whispered* Oooh, check out the talent.

R: Total potential.

M: Aren't they?

R: Yeah, potential douche bags.

M: Oh, lighten up! *she turns to the boys* Hey, how would you boys like to spend the rest of your evening with two gorgeous gals?

Ben: Well if you're talking about yourselves, then we'd love to.

*flash forward (roughly an hour) all characters are considerably inebriated. Megan and ben are kissing)

Chris: Looks like they're gonna be the lucky one up tonight.

R: I might be persuaded into some fun.

C: And what is your idea of fun?

R: Depends on who im having fun with.

C: Why don't we kiss and find out?

*boy leans in and River and they kiss.*

M: Go river! Woo!

B: Do you ladies wanna come back to mine?

River: I guess one night wouldn't hurt.

*as lights go down the back wall is lit with several text messages from Alex, asking where River is*
