Chapter 3

"Pleeeeease Mum?" I whined. There's no harm in asking again

"I've already said no Tyla, I'm not letting you move of by your self," she replied sternly. I dropped to my knees on the wooden floor and placed my hands in front of me.

"You know my dream is to be a professional gymnast, this is the first step," I pleaded, barley above a whisper. I heard her sigh through her nose. She slowly walked over to the double bed to her left and took a seat on the edge. I lifted my self from the ground and placed a hand on my hip.

"Tyla," she started, "I love you so much, and we've had a great holiday, but we have a plane to catch in five hours, it's time to go home and get back to reality."

A wave of anger washed through me. My fists clenched into tight balls at my side.

"Fine," I snapped before spinning on my heal and storming away. I slammed the door to my room with a force that shook the hole wall. I paced back and forth, pulling at the ends of my hair. How could my own mother deny me this opportunity?

Two days later (Monday)

"Alana, Alana!" I yelled, trying to get my best friends attention. I weaved my way past bodies . Alana's head whipped around, her blonde hair falling in a curly mess around her shoulders. Her eyes landed on me and she let out a deafening squeal.

"Move, out of my way," she demanded, shoving past people. She threw her lanky arms around my neck. I returned her hug, smelling her familiar sent of cinnamon and sugar.

"I've missed you girl," she squealed in my ear before releasing me from the hug. She looked me up and down before giving me an approving smile.

"You jelly of my tan?" I asked cheekily, spinning in a small circle, arms out.

"You know I am," she replied. She linked my arm with hers and started to drag me towards our form rooms.

"I have soooo much to tell you, your not going to believe it," I said with a sigh.

"You'll have to tell me at lunch, I've got to run," she replied, not looking at me. Without waiting for my reply she strode off in the other direction. I glanced back just in time to see her wrapping her arms around her boyfriends neck.

"Great, I'm left alone on my first day back," I mumbled to myself.

I had just finished telling Alana all about the gymnastics program, when the bell rang signalling the end of lunch.

"Tyla, I'm so sorry you couldn't stay there," Alana said sincerely, pulling me in for a hug. I leant into her, resting my head on her shoulder. I let out a sigh before pulling away.

"There was SO many hot guys in Hawaii!" I exclaimed, "and I won't get to see any of them."

"It's ok, I'll talk to you after school, ok?" Alana asked. I gave a small nod before picking up my backpack and slinging it over my shoulder. I made my way to class down the narrow hallway. I took my regular seat at the back of my math class. A familiar girl with light brown skin and black curly hair took a seat next to me.

"Hey, Shantey," I greeted her with an almost forced smile.

"Hi, I've got loads to tell you! Were to start.... ok well when I went to-" I drowned out what she said next, not wanting to hear her brag about the boring stuff she did all holidays. And she doesn't even stop to think about asking me how my holiday was. I loved the girl and all, but everything always had to be about her.
