"Is Jenny even a Chinese word?!" I huffed while taking a bite of the famous black burger at McDonald's. The bread's bun was black in color, and was covered with sesame seeds. To be honest, it was oddly delicious. I hoped Australia's McDonald's could make some too.
Luke and I sneaked out of the hotel for the second time in the middle of the night all because I needed someone to converse about my feelings to. Luke insisted on eating outside because the food at the school was not even close to satisfactory. They tasted like hospital food, and I wished I could talk to one of the chefs and tell them to change their dishes or else, students would be forced to buy food outside of the cafeteria.
"What's with the attitude? As if your name is so Aussie." Luke rolled his eyes at me.
"You clearly saw her flirting," I said, mirroring his expressions. We were conversing about Nathan and the Chinese girl who can't seem to get her eyes off him.
"Nah, she was just being friendly, and you're being judg-y." Luke nudged my shoulder and I kicked his foot. "What was that for?" he asked, wincing.
"For not taking my side."
"I'm always by your side." He beamed, then took another bite of his white burger. Hong Kong's McDonald's did have some weird food on their menu. Black and white burgers, and green tea ice creams.
"Correction, you're physically by my side. I don't think you'll ever support me at anything."
"So, you're up for an argument? Jess, I came all the way here just to be with you. Who are you to tell me that I am not?" Luke dropped his burger, and I watched as his expression changed.
I sighed. How could I say those words? He was the reason I was in Hong Kong in the very first place. His financial support contributed a lot.
"Sorry. I swear, I regret saying those words." I tried changing the subject to the possible places we could visit but he wouln't even speak to me. He was scrolling through his phone while waiting for me to finish my food. I gave up. After taking one last bite of the burger, I stood from my seat.
"Enjoy conversing with your phone while I head back to the hotel. I should have had a midnight snack by myself." I said, and I meant every word. I was furious and agitated by the fact that he had chosen to ignore me. I already apologized. It's not like I murdered his pet or whatsoever.
"P.S., I hate you, period," I continued. I stood from my seat, took out twenty HK dollars from my pocket to pay him back for the burger. When I turned away from him, he called my name, but I insisted on walking toward the exit.
Before I could even reach the glass door, he wrapped his sweater around my waist, and ushered as we headed towards the dim-lighted street of Prince Edward.
"If I wasn't supportive I would let you have your walk of shame with those blood stains on your pants," he whispered. He shifted his position to my side with one hand placed on my waist.
My cheeks tingled, and just like that, I was a flaming red hot chili pepper too abashed to speak. It never happened to me. Especially in front of a guy. I felt like killing myself. Where to find the fastest bus ever? Oh gods of Olympus, why? I wondered how much blood he saw. I also wondered how many other people saw my back.
"I did not know that I'm on period." I managed to say while we're waiting for the bus to arrive.
Luke chuckled lightly and replied, "You don't mean it right? When you told me 'I hate you, period', with the comma."
I felt like crying already. I wished he would stop talking about it. I was beyond embarrassed. Why do girls even get periods in the first place? Why does it have to be a woman's suffering
