Chapter eight
Skylars POV.
I smelt the familiar scent of disinfectant before I could open my eyes, I couldn't , they felt like they were locked shut so I couldn't see the horrors of the lab.
The smell gave it away, it was all just one of their sick experiments, I wasn't free, there probably never was any newcomers. My tortured mind had fallen into yet another trap and envisioned an implausible escape.
I struggled to open my eyes but still failed so I let my other senses roam my surroundings,
I was hooked up to multiple machines, I could hear them beeping at increasing rates,
I wasn't on the hard, cold steel table that they usually put me on in the lab, I could feel a luxuriously soft mattress shielding my back, I was still in my old uniform, I could feel the familiar scratchiness.
I heard muffled voices, unfamiliar voices, that was always a bad thing, they only brought in new people for the larger experiments.
The voices moved closer and their footsteps echoed in my ears.
Two people, one larger than the other, one slightly running to keep up with the larger man.
That was all I could get from their footsteps as my heart pounded in fear.
The machines increased their tempo as my heart raced, the footsteps quickened in response to the alarming machinery.
I heard the door swing open but it wasn't the old metal door of the lab.
I held my breath in an attempt to seem asleep to them but my heart and now fluttering eyelids gave me away.
One of the men cleared his throat and then spoke in a clear yet aged voice.
" we know you are awake child, we would like to speak with you? "
Speak with me? they never spoke to me kindly, only to demand mundane answers and sneer at me in derision...
I felt my throat tighten before violent coughing spasms rocked my body.
My eyes flew open before squeezing tightly shut again and my hand flew to my mouth to prevent any blood from spilling, I had coughed blood onto a guards jacket and suffered greatly, no need to have a repeat.
The light that flooded into my eyes blinded me for a few seconds after my coughs had died away.
As my eyes adjusted I found myself in a white room, not a lab but similar, it had two small beds, the one I was in and one across the room, there was a normal light brown door that contrasted the white and there were chairs on my left, to my right were the two men, one in a lab coat that hung on his broad shoulders, he had an ageing face and brown hair that was greying , the other man was wearing what looked like a dark pair of jeans and a formal shirt, rolled up sleeves to show his wiry muscles, muscles that could punish me if I make a wrong move.
My shoulders tensed as my fear still rolled in my stomach. I looked back to the man in the lab coat and looked at his feet not wanting to show any disrespect, waiting for him to continue.
" your name is skylar right?, I am doctor Manny or just Manny"
It was said more as a statement but I nodded anyway, confused as to why he didn't call me 003 like all the men in lab coats did.
" do you know where you are, skylar? "
He asked gently with no menace in his voice, he sounded genuinely concerned, confused even more, I shook my head no.
" you are safe now, you are no longer in ... that facility... , you are in a hospital room at our pack house. Do you understand what I'm telling you? "
His voice held kindness and reassurance but when he said ' that facility ' he sneered it as though the thought disgusted him.
I heard the truth in his words and I had to look up into his eyes to know for sure.
His flecked green eyes held sincerity, concern and pity. He was telling the truth.
I felt a tear run down my cheek as his words sunk in, if this is really real and we escaped, where were Sally and mike and their Alpha.
The man who I now know is the pack doctor gave the man a look before turning to the door.
The man followed shortly before turning to me and saying
" I will send in someone to help you get cleaned up and changed. Do not be afraid, no one here will hurt you. "
And with those kind words the stranger left.
I was staring at the wires attached to my skin when I heard light footsteps outside my door, the door opened to reveal a young girl who looked to be around sixteen.
She smiled shyly before asking
" Can I come in? I was sent to help you clean up and change."
My eyes were still wide when she walked in anyway and gently sat at the foot of my bed.
" My name is Ashley, what's yours? "
She held out her hand in front of her and I looked at it quizzically before answering in a hoarse voice not nearly as melodious as hers.
" I am 003... I mean... Skylar. "
I fumbled over my words when she looked at me weirdly when I said my code, it was drilled into me as my name by them.
She still held her hand in front of her and I realized she wanted to shake hands, I had seen the guards do it, I awkwardly grasped her hand and gave it a slight shake, I heard her chuckle as she grabbed my hand tightly and shook once before letting go and staring at my now exposed wrists.
The chains had been removed and the skin underneath was raw and bruised over the scars of where the chains once were. I hadn't even noticed they were off, but now my hands felt light.
She swallowed audibly before looking down into her lap, I did the same, trying to act as normal as possible.
