"Hey, Jungkook. Let's eat some breakfast and head out." A voice sounded near Jungkook's ear. He groaned, stretching his arms above his head and opening his eyes.
The room looked exactly as it had when he had gone to sleep. The door leading out to the hallway was cracked open, leaking light from outside. It was still nighttime and the moon shone through his window. Jungkook rubbed his hands over his face, groaning loudly.
"It's still night outside, dad. What time is it anyway?" Jungkook's father chuckled and answered quietly. It was 4:00 in the morning, and they would be leaving at 5:00. He told Jungkook that the sun would be coming up around the time they left.
"I'll let you get dressed, then. Oh! I forgot to tell you yesterday night that you won't need your suitcase. The government provides clothes." Jungkook grumbled an inaudible reply and sat up as his father closed the door behind him.
So today was the first day of his service. Only two more years, he thought to himself.
----------------------------------------------------
Jungkook jogged down the stairs in a black t-shirt and sweatpants. He didn't care much for what he was wearing, but his dad had told him he was going to change soon after they got to the base anyway. Jungkook sat down across from his dad at the dining table and immediately dug into the sausage and eggs his father had made.
"You need to call me General Jeon from now on, not father. I guessed you already knew that, though...right?" Jungkook raised his eyebrows as he chewed his food slowly. He maintained eye contact as he nodded at his dad. "Such a smart young boy." General Jeon smiled and reached forward to ruffle his son's hair.
----------------------------------------------------
The car ride was silent and Jungkook didn't try to say anything to his father, seeing as how his dad was doing the same thing. They quickly left the city behind, emerging onto a seemingly endless road in the middle of miles and miles of farming land. Jungkook looked out the window, sighing as the fluttering in his stomach stirred up again.
He didn't want to disappoint his dad - General Jeon. He didn't want to disappoint General Jeon, but he had never done anything like this before and was quite nervous. Jungkook knew that his father wouldn't treat him any differently than his comrades, and wouldn't hesitate to yell at him if he slipped up.
Jungkook took a deep breath in, closing his eyes as he calmed his emotions. He wished he could just dance right now. He could loose himself and tune out the real world when he danced. He missed it already and suddenly realized how rusty his dancing would probably get over these two years. Jungkook almost shed a tear at the thought, but steeled his thoughts and gave himself an encouraging pep talk in his head.
It'll be fine, Jungkook. You'll be fine. You were the one that agreed to do this. You were the one that decided to give up your passions to finally see your dad. You are the one that will go on this adventure and eventually get on with your life. You. Will. Be. Fine.
Jungkook sighed again and saw his dad's gaze flicker over to him from the corner of his eye. Jungkook turned back to looking out the window, humming a tune under his breath as the endless rows of wheat and corn flew past the window.
----------------------------------------------------
The car hit a pothole and Jungkook was thrown from his daydreaming. He turned his gaze from the passenger window to the front of the car. Jungkook could barely make out a group of dark brown buildings on the horizon.
They had left the corn fields for just straight up dirt fields a while back. It was boring looking out the window - for that matter, any direction. Jungkook had to deal with it, though, so he didn't complain...out loud.
General Jeon had remained quiet throughout the whole ride and Jungkook spared a minute to wonder what was on his father's mind. Probably nothing too important.
The car met a chain link fence adorned with barbed wire along the top about five-hundred feet from the base. Two men in uniforms - they looked about Jungkook's age, maybe a little older - saluted to General Jeon and pushed the gates open. They closed them after the vehicle had gone through.
Jungkook took in a shaky breath as he viewed the numerous soldiers loitering around and chatting with friends in the main courtyard. They seemed to all snap their gazes towards the car as it jolted to a stop in the middle of the clearing.
General Jeon looked at his son, almost sadly, and got out of the Jeep, slamming his door shut. Jungkook scrambled to get out and catch up with his already fastly moving father.
Jungkook felt like a weight had been dropped on him once he stepped out of the car. He could feel the numerous pairs of eyes staring at his back. He felt out of place in his sweatpants compared to the other soldiers in their tan uniforms.
Jungkook was about to wave at a group of them, but decided against it and quickly jogged up to his dad.
He had already made it to the front set of doors to what Jungkook assumed was the main building when his son finally caught up.
"General Jeon, I see you're back." The soldier guarding the doors mused. He turned to Jungkook. "And you brought someone else."
"Yes, Mister Park. He's my son." The soldier nodded, looking Jungkook up and down. Shivers were sent down his back at the man's gaze.
"Well. Nice to meet you Junior General Jeon. I hope you enjoy your stay." At this, the soldier pushed open one of the double doors, revealing a concrete room with a door and another set of guards on the other side.
Jungkook nodded at the boy, smiling nervously and stepping inside after his father.
There was no going back now.
And what was with that soldier?
