Sixteen
I would admit, even though I’m pretty much confined to the safe house, and not able to do many of the things for a girl’s night, I still had a lot of fun. After the boys left, we rented a bunch of really girly movies, mostly romantic comedies, some musicals, and a few dramas. We even gawked at some of the hotties that were in the movies, including my favorite actor. Violet and I were talking about Taylor Lautner like we’ve just met him less than five minutes ago after watching the latest Twilight Saga DVD. It was like we were twins separated from birth, but with different skin tones if that were possible.
Then, it was when we paused The Blind Side to grab some popcorn she started to get a little personal.
“Amanda, do you really like Cyrus?” she asked as she threw a bag of popcorn into the microwave. I couldn’t help but stare at her, and not say a word. When Violet sees my expression, she quickly adds, “What? I’m just curious.”
I stared at her for another moment, but her brown eyes were telling the truth. “Yeah. I do like him.” I finally admitted with conviction in my tone. But yet, I couldn’t help but wonder. “Why did you ask?” I added.
“I could see it on your face whenever I mention his name.” When I make another face that shows nothing but shock, she quickly added defensively with both of her hands in the air, “Sorry, it’s part of our training.”
“It’s okay.” I said.
“As I was about to say, before your face stopped me, that there was a time that I was in to him.” Violet paused, probably gauging my reaction. But when she didn’t see anything on my face, she continued. “We worked together on a few missions back in the day, time passed, and my feelings for him faded a lot faster than blue jeans after you wash ‘em a million times.”
“So how did you meet Garrett?” I asked when she paused to take the popcorn bag from the microwave, and poured it into two bowls.
“I had a day off one day, and it was a couple of years ago,” she began with a smile, “and I did what I usually do when I have a break, I go off to the shooting range. I was practicing with one of my favorite weapons, an AK 47 pistol. The mission we had to do back then involved making sure that former Soviet Union soldiers are not following their communist ways, so I was relieved to have a day off were I didn’t I have to speak Russian, and I was in the moment when it came to target practice. He happened to be practicing right next to me with a 9 mm pistol, and he said something about girls having poor aim. I was lucky that I was reloading my gun, with the safety on, before I would accidentally shoot him, or worse.”
When she sees my look of worry, she laughed briefly before she went back into her story. “Anyway, before I knew it, we had a little contest to see how many shots can we hit the bulls eye on the target. I won, but I later found out that he let me win, and that he was flirting with me the entire time.” She laughed again, this time only lightly.
“You guys clicked instantly.” I said.
It wasn’t a question, but Violet nodded anyway. “Yeah, you could say that. I kind of knew that we’d somehow hit it off. Almost like a six sense, if you would call it that.” she smiled. “I, honestly, didn’t need my training to really know that you’re into Cyrus. Just like I knew I was into Garrett even before he started the stupid, and pointless contest.” Again she laughed.
For a moment, I couldn’t speak. It was almost impossible to conceive that Violet was once interested in Cyrus. Violet seemed to sense my moment of awkward silence.
“Would you relax? If I wanted Cyrus, would I even be with Garrett?” she asked incredulously with her black brows raised.
After another moment of awkward silence, and after thinking over her words, I finally managed to speak. “You’re right. I’m sorry if you think that I thought you were trying to steal my boy-friend from me.” I said solemnly.
