We walked in after pumping the car full of gas. Which was on heck of a job considering I did not know how to work a 1930's gas pump. Thank you school for not teaching me these life skills but deciding to teach me the gradient of a line. I'm not a freaking engineer. There was a boy I knew at the front counter, brown quiffed hair and green eyes. Not quite as pretty as Lauren's. "So what brings you to this place?" He asked. "Normally the only people we get here are people who are looking for directions to somewhere else or artsy girls who take pictures on the vintage mural outside and post them on their hipster Tumblr." Lauren and I both gave each other looks. I like this kid already. Same attitude, funny guy, I like it. "Unfortunately no, we are not artsy girls. We are on a quest of mass discoveries." A smiled as he looked confused. "I don't know what any of those words mean but I'll pretend I do."
"Thanks man." He started to look Lauren up and down skeptically. I could tell she was uncomfortable as she kept shifting her weight from one foot to the other and playing with some loose threads off her worn sweater. "What about the girl?" He questioned. "We'll tell you in the car."
"What?!" That was Lauren. She stared at me with a face of terror. I had to talk to her about this. "Could you excuse us for a second?" I asked the boy. "Yeah, sure bro." Bro? Oh well. I pulled Lauren aside and tried to calm her down. She started to breathe very heavily, her chest rising and falling with every labored inhale. I cradled her cheek in the palm of my hand. Her face was so tiny. "Hey, hey breathe, you're gonna be okay." She burst out in tears." You can't just ask a stranger to come with us!"
"It's going to be okay, I just need you to calm down for a second, Honey." Her eyes were pleading and begging for me not to let him come. But he was our best shot at getting to Cali. He was my best friend's cousin. He goes to college in California, he's made this drive tons of times he'd have no problem helping to get us where we need to go. "I-I don't trust h-him. H-he's a man, h-he can hurt me!" I sighed and looked her in the eye. "Sweetie, I know Isaac, and he would never do anything like that okay? You have nothing to worry about." I reassured her. " come here." I opened my arms as she accepted my hug. " I-I'm scared."
"You have nothing to be scared of." I turned back to Isaac. "Alright, let's get going."
"WAIT!" He said with a sense of urgency in his voice. "I need to do something before I go. Something I've always wanted to do"
"Be my guest." I said gesturing to the whole store that was as empty as a coal mine. I watched in amusement as I saw him kicking over shelves and throwing endless bags of twinkies and flam in' hot Cheetos to the tile. He ended the grand finale by flipping off the security camera. "Alright," He said breathlessly. "Let's do this."
