After I arrived home from the bookstore, I began to get ready for the dinner party. After I drove by the Godfrey Institute today, I realized how big of a deal this is to impress everyone my mother works with. And I really don't want to let her down. I take a shower and shave every inch of my legs, arms, and armpits, having dark hair can be a blessed pain. I realize it's been a year since I have painted my nails, so I grab my favourite brand of nail polish and colour, and begin painting my nails a dark navy blue. When I finish I grab my blow dryer and attempt the drying process of my nails to pick up the pace. I carefully unwrap the towel out of my hair and find it in an a untamed mess, I grab my curling wand which I have never used, until this day. Luckily it's much easier than I thought it would be, I pin my hair back and begin the makeup process. As I begin to put some foundation on, I realize I've never acted like, well this kind of a girl before, at least not like this. I've never done this routine before. Sure I've put on makeup, but I've never really gone all out to look this nice, and just for my mother's co-workers and colleagues.
When my mother arrives, my makeup has settled in and I've just begun to put on my dress, "Crap!" I yell at myself finding that I have no shoes to match my dress, my mother rushes into my room.
"Sweetie are you-," she stops herself by taking in the sight of me, "Oh my goodness darling you look so..."
"Bad?" I say worried.
"You look like you've actually worked to make an effort."
"Thanks? I was just really worried about impressing everyone, and looking bad in front of you."
"Oh sweetie." She walks over the shoes I have pulled out of my closet, "You could never look bad in front of me." She pulls me in her arms and begins to sniff me, "Did you put on perfume?" She says partly shocked, I don't usually rely on perfume most of the time, usually I've only used it on the occasion that I didn't shower. However, I usually take a shower and put on deodorant and say I'm done.
"It's the one you and dad got me for Christmas."
"Smells lovely doesn't it?" She says as I nod. "Yeah well of course it smells nice, when you actually wear it," she says nudging me.
"Hey, hey, don't wrinkle the dress. By the way, you wouldn't happen to have any heels that would match this dress, would you?"
"Heels? You're more desperate than I am, sweetie you can barely walk in heels without bending your knees for support."
"I had to wear character shoes for all the shows I was in though and I was just fine."
"That doesn't mean that the look of pain on your face was non-existent."
I nudge her while pushing her into her room, "Get ready!" I say.
While my mother begins her routine, I look in her closet for some heels or flats even, but unlucky for me I'm left with nothing to match my dress than navy blue heels.
By the time my mother is ready, I have placed some of the leftover double chocolate biscotti into some Tupperware, it's a good thing I made plenty of it. My mother gives me a strange look when I enter the car with the Tupperware, "Why are you bringing that?"
"I didn't want to come empty handed." Me and my father would usually cook something for work parties to bring along, so it should be no surprise to my mother.
However, when we arrive to the venue I see why my mother gave me the confused expression, waiters are everywhere, there's no table to select food, or set any of it down for the matter of fact. Well if I end up by myself tonight at least I'll have chocolate to comfort me. The venue has millions of lights and candles surrounding the area, it has a bit of a vintage setting to it, all the furniture looks like you would have found it in the eighteen hundreds.
