Eventually I was able to come out of my shock by sleeping in the car, when we finally arrived Simon gently brushes my shoulder and I wake up to find I'm back in Hemlock Grove. I sigh as if being here physically pains me.
And then I hear the crackle of paper in my pocket, my eyes nearly jump out of my head and for a while I had forgotten the blissful ignorance of not knowing what was below my father's closet.
"...Eden?" I must've not realized Simon calling my name.
"Yes?" I said without looking at him.
Instead of saying anything he just laid his hand slowly on my cheek, I looked at him and he just smiled as if to reassure me that everything was going to be ok. He kissed my cheek, but somewhere close enough where if he just moved further to the right he could've kissed my lips. I've never been kissed before, I guess if it were to be anyone I'd want it to be him, but after today I don't need anymore surprises. I slowly opened my eyelids as I had forgotten they had shut and there Simon is.
The car begins to crackle with a knock on the hood, I turn to see-, "Sorry hope I'm not interrupting anything." Roman. He says with almost a twisted smirk that could make me crawl into a corner.
"Who's that?"
I storm out of the car, "What do you want?" I say a bit powerfully that it surprises me and Roman.
"What do you think?"
"Eden who is this?"
"Look if you're actually going to contribute anything to this conversation, I suggest you get back in your car." Roman looks at him with this long stare that confuses me, but Simon seems to be fully engaged without his knowing and walks back into his car. Roman swiftly pulls a handkerchief from his pocket and wipes away what appears to be blood dripping from his nose.
"Now are you going to listen?"
"You know, if you really want to know how to have a conversation with a person, try not being so forceful, pinning them against a wall, bruising their fucking wrists, and scaring their friends into their cars."
"Oh you know how to let them down easy," I turn to see Simon trapped in his car completely focused on Roman and I, "And what bruises?"
"What do you mean what bru-," I gesture to my wrists but I find them to be their normal skin tone, no purple bruises, I touch it as if it might reappear, but it doesn't even hurt anymore.
"Look here darling-," he raises his eyebrows as if to confirm with me if that that was enough decency and non-forcefulness that I had referred to in my earlier comment on his sheer rudeness, "-no one comes to this fucking town and is ever normal, no one has ever come in this town and hasn't broken a family or someone to bits. No one has ever come into this town and has ever been normal, why do you think I would've allowed the institute to hire your mother? Anyone who has ever worked at that fucking place has been one thing or another, so far she checks out and it better stay that fucking way." He finishes but all the while managed to push me all the way to the garage and pounds his fist against the garage with so much force that it leaves a large dent.
He begins to walk away and my vision begins to blur, "Wait!" I call, my breathing becomes so short it reminded me of a hummingbird's heartbeat, a tear streams down but to me it feels like it's raining. I must be sweating or something. And images flash of the secret room in my father's closet, his casket, my brother's, and my mother screaming. And I can't seem to stop myself from falling
He turns to look at me and by that time I can only see my hand reaching out to him. And then there's nothing, I can hear voices to a light mumble and the sound of my breathing, my eyes must still be open or my glasses are off because all I can see is a faint light and small things from time to time moving. But then everything becomes black.
Eden!
