Ring ring.
...
Ring ring.
"Shit, shit, shit." Jenna raced across her room to get her phone, stumbling upon the mess of old photographs that she caused.
Who the hell was calling her at this time anyway?
Too startled to even look at the screen, Jenna answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"Why is your light on?" The voice on the other end said.
Jenna let out a deep breath and looked out the window, only to find an amused-looking guy staring right back at her.
"Seriously, Calum? You nearly gave me a heart attack!" She scolded.
"Why are you awake at this hour?" He asked again, ignoring what she just said.
"I might as well ask you the same question." Jenna retorted.
"Well, I was sound asleep, like any other normal person would be right now. But I was woken up by your music."
"Oh, right. Sorry about that." She turned off the record player. She was home alone and didn't think a little music would disturb anyone.
Apparently, she got carried away and turned it up just a little too much.
And now, her weirdo of a neighbour was awake.
"Why are you up?" He insisted.
"You know, we could just continue this conversation without talking on the phone." Their windows weren't exactly on the same level, but they could still easily see and talk to each other.
"You're probably right, we do look like idiots."
And he ended the phone call.
"Alright, for the last time.." Calum was now talking to Jenna through the window, "why did you find it convenient to blast The 1975's album at two in the morning?"
"I just couldn't sleep, sorry." She shrugged.
"Scared?" Calum smirked, knowing she was alone.
"What? No. I just.." She trailed off, looking inside her room. There were a few records laying on the floor, a huge pile of photo albums, and some snacks.
Yeah, that was a long story.
"I'm supposed to be cleaning my room, but instead I ended up looking at my parents' wedding photos."
Calum laughed, not surprised by that. Jenna usually does even stranger things when she's home alone. He has lived next to her all his life and he knows it quite well. She tried making cookies this one time when her parents were away and ended up burning the kitchen and staying with Calum's family until her parents returned. She even painted her room once. And the list goes on.
And weirdly enough, she's never done any of the things that teenagers usually do when their parents leave them in charge of the house, like throwing a party. Or even having a guy over.
Though Calum isn't one hundred percent sure about the last one. Not that he wanted to know anyway.
He figured that she has trouble sleeping, and that it gets worse when she's alone in the house. Which was often, due to her parents' jobs. Her father works a lot of night shifts at the hospital. Her mother is a petrochemical scientist, and she would be away for ten days or so at a time.
"Sorry I woke you up." She alologized again.
"It's fine, really."
"Well, I'll just keep the music down now." She smiled, turning back to her messy room.
"Goodnight." He called.
"Goodnight, Calum." She yelled back.
...
Ring ring.
Jenna smiled, knowing who it was without even having to look at the phone.
"Now I can't fall asleep again." Calum huffed.
"Poor you."
"It's all your fault, you know. It's three a.m. and it's a school night and we have a test tomorrow and I can't sleep." Yes, he was good at keeping track of their exams and panicking about them, but not to actually study for them properly.
"I'll let you cheat off of me." Jenna would usually help Calum when they have tests and quizes. She hated doing it but he was a sneaky bastard and somehow he would manage to get her sympathy, and her answers. Not that she was an excellent student or anything, but she was good enough.
"Great! Now that's settled.."
"Go on,"
"I.. I Don't even know. Jenna I'm just so tired and bored."
"Jesus, you're such a child when you're sleepy." She couldn't help but giggle at his raspy, whiny voice.
There was a long pause over the phone. None of them knew what to say.
Until, the ridiculously impulsive side of Jenna kicked in.
"Hey, do you want to come over?"
