dear smart girl:
you stand on the scale,
you listen to their judgements,
you check your grade reports.
but you know better than to believe
that a number
can tell you how beautiful you are,
that their words
can change your worth,
that a letter on a paper
can determine how much you have learned in life.
your weight -
the quantity of matter, your relative mass -
does not reflect what your character
[your heart ]
is composed of -
love, compassion, strength,
beauty.
the words from their mouths -
thoughtless, selfish -
do not create
who you are,
[what defines you,]
and truth is not made
from the sounding of their empty opinions.
a grade point average -
an integer less than 5 -
does not equate
to how smart you are
and even the school you attend
is not the definition of your potential.
darling, you are much more than that;
you are brilliant, beautiful and strong enough to know
that you are not the lies that they throw at you.
your significance is not found in meeting their empty standards.
you are worth so much more.
