SEVEN: Danger

Ariana practiced fighting, shooting arrows, and her reflexes all night. She was exhausted to say the least, but beyond proud of the progress she was making. Ariana could sense an instant change in herself that was nothing and everything at the same time. No one could see it, but they could feel it.

For once, the girl did not have the same nightmare that had been haunting her for a year. Ariana was ecstatic and walked into class with a smile on her face, because seeing Luke was going to solve all her problems. Saving Luke had stopped her nightmares. No one knew about them, no one knew she was running on 4 hours of sleep, no one knew how scared she was. Ariana was too scared to tell anyone because they'd call her a fucking lunatic. As long as Luke was safe and sound, all the worries drowning her faded away.

This was the change Ariana needed in her life. She could finally protect and feel sure of herself. There was a whirlwind of emotions she pushed aside the past year ravaging inside her, and the excitement was only building with every tick of the clock. Strangely, hiding deep down beneath all of this, her jittery nerves were acting up. Joan had basically built up this tacky idea of Ariana being some merciless torture machine, and following the 'Grande' family path. Joan was going to find out one way or another, her hopes were on life support.

Ariana took a seat behind Luke. It wasn't her usual seat, but why would he even notice? Even if he did, he probably wouldn't give two shits.

The moment Ariana walked into the room, Luke felt his muscles tense. From how much she was staring at him yesterday, she had to be spying ro planning something. It felt kind of ridiculous worrying about a girl who was five feet tall, but there was no doubt in his mind that she could have a silver bullet in his heart within seconds. When she sat down behind him, he could feel rough goosebumps jump to the surface of his pale skin. Luke thought about bolting halfway through class and never fucking seeing her again.

When the bell rang, Luke practically flashed out of the room. Ariana followed him from a distance, noticing he wasn't going to the cafeteria. She finally saw the blonde enter the boy's locker room with Michael and Ashton, and quietly walked towards it to stand outside the doors.

"The full moon is on Saturday night. We have to get ready."

"Full moon? Holy shit, what are we going to do?" Luke asked.

"We're going to have to do it in Ashton's basement, that's the only place we can. It's near the Lake, and people barely go around there. Plus, if you escape you'll just run off into the woods."

"Or you'll run the opposite direction into town, and finally earn some blue eyes."

"Ashton, stop! Luke, you won't hurt anyone, okay? Trust me."

"Are you sure? I know what you guys did a year ago, and you're supposed to be able to control it after such long times of being wolves. Especially you Michael, you were born a wolf! I'm still pretty shaky on them and I almost escaped last time. Shouldn't I be getting better?"

Ariana raised her brows at Luke's response. It was a full moon when they attacked him. A full moon could cause them to turn that aggressive?

"Shut up, Luke. We got a little bit out of control, whatever. You're just lucky I'm you're alpha and not Ashton. He would just let you stay home and rip your family to shreds."

Ariana covered her mouth. It was unsettling to know that Luke could just blindly murder his whole family, and probably more. Maybe he'd even kill Ariana. It was scary, but probably much scarier for Luke. It's not fair that he's got to live with that now.

Ariana decided to stop listening, since lunch was going to be over soon. She stepped away, still processing the new information.

"Have you seen the library? It's closed off, how come the school hasn't even asked us about what happened?! It's ridiculous!" Calum ranted to Luke. Oddly, he didn't seem to be all that phased from yesterday.

"Uh, yeah, weird." Luke muttered, stepping onto the field. They were trying out for the football team, after Calum finally convinced Luke. They did it every year, and for some reason Luke skipped it last September.

"Okay, Hemmings. You're up," Coach Setti called.

"Go, Luke! You've got this!" Calum cheered behind his friend, who picked up a football and threw it across the field. Coach looked up to see Luke made a touchdown, raising her brows.

"Nice throw, Hemmings. Now, let's see if you can pass it to Shawn while Zayn blocks. Tough one there—" Coach rambled on while Luke passed to Shawn, a perfect shot.

Zayn gasped as the ball grazed his fingertips. Luke smirked once seeing looks of shock. Calum was especially surprised. Where was his scrawny friend who couldn't play sports for shit?

"Nice job, Luke. Next up, Calum Hood." Setti called. She didn't even watch, he always was a perfect shot.

"I miss when you sucked and I was better than you." Calum said, almost sad that Luke no longer had noodle arms.

"What? I'm not better than you." Luke scoffed. He didn't want Calum to think too much about this, for obvious reasons.

"That's true, because I'm amazing. But you've changed so much since last year. It's hard to keep up. How'd you get so good at everything suddenly? I kinda feel like a potatoe."

"I'm growing up and discovering who I am, just like you. I mean, two years ago you never would've even looked at a guy and two days after meeting Michael you'd marry him." Luke shrugged, trying to get Calum off his tail.

"Shut up." Calum responded, blocking out Luke's words. A blush rose on his cheek, but this wasn't getting dropped anytime soon. Luke chuckled, punching Calum's shoulder and continued teasing the boy.
