Percy was unable to sleep.
He hadn't eaten anything whole day. At dinner, he'd burned up all his food as an offering to gods in the camp-fire. He felt like he wanted to shove the food in those stupid gods annoying faces. He'd sat grumpily on his bench watching, waiting for Annabeth. She didn't come for dinner. He hadn't seen her all day, in fact he hadn't seen her from the time they had the big fight.
Percy knew it was his mistake, but he couldn't bring himself to apologize, partly because he couldn't see her anywhere and he was too annoyed to go searching.
It was all because of that stupid picnic with Leo and Calypso.
If he hadn't gone with them,
If only he had just thought for a second before going,
If only that stupid device of Leo's hadn't fired up and landed them in that desert.
If only...
But it had been fun. Leo's idea for a picnic was great. Percy had wanted to take Annabeth too, but she was off at Olympus for her architecture project and he didn't want to disturb her. Leo had promised it'd be for a few hours; they could test his new device that could teleport people from one place to another. Leo had gotten the idea from Nico's shadow-traveling power. They had decided to hop into a mountain terrain, spend some quality time and be back. But it hadn't worked out. While returning the device went berserk and they had landed in some desert thousands of miles away, without anything to fix the device, and what it took to return to camp half-blood...
Let's not even go there. Percy thought
But the problem was, all the picnic, the desert adventure had been great. He couldn't forget the happiness and smiles on his, Leo's and calypso's faces when they finally arrived.
As it turned out, so couldn't Annabeth.
Percy had been so hopeful to tell all his adventure to Annabeth when he had realized that he had messed up everything.
She was angry not just because of going to picnic without her, or scaring her by getting lost for days. She was angry because not only had he left her alone for days without any information of where he had went, he had also missed her birthday during that picnic.
So it was a big fight. She had stormed off without even hearing his explanation and he had stormed off in another direction without giving her one.
Now, alone in his cabin, he felt bad for her and decided to finally fix it. Tomorrow he would go and formally apologize to her.
But what about now? He couldn't sleep.
He spent most of the night staring at the cabin roof and finally after what seemed to be eternity he got up and went for a walk.
Within half an hour he was miles away from camp, in deep forest, with the sound of rushing river getting nearer and nearer.
Dawn was almost breaking and he realized he had been walking towards the water, as always.
As he drew closer, he saw her. Annabeth was sitting on the bank, staring at the river with a sad expression on her face.
When she heard him approaching, her eyes darted to his face for a second and her expression turned fierce and angry.
Percy signed and decided this was as good of an opportunity to apologize as he'd get.
"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to......"
"Listen Seaweed Brain, I'm not...."
But before either of them could finish their sentence, something big landed in the river showering them with water.
That something big was a giant monster like a dinosaur but with beak like an eagle. It splashed around in the water and roared so loud Percy wished human ears could be turned off and on because he didn't wanted to hear its sound again.
Within seconds he had his sword ready but before he could decide what to do, the creature jumped up like a frog and landed on the other side of the forest within a few more jumps he was out of there sight before Percy could finish saying "What is that thing?"
Annabeth's face was so screwed up in concentration she didn't even heard him.
"Annabeth what was that?"
"I... I don't know"
"YOU don't know? You?"
"I've never seen or heard of such kind of monster, besides it didn't even look like how the monsters usually looks, and it didn't attacked us, didn't so much as looked at us, which means it didn't smelled us, so ... I really don't have any idea what that thing was."
Percy was taken aback. Annabeth always knew everything. At least everything related to gods, monsters and mythology.
That was definitely a monster, unless Percy had hallucinated, which he was sure he hadn't as both his and Annabeth clothes were still soaked up with water.
"Well, what does it matter if we don't know its name and history or its parents or its class grades, it was a monster and it's headed towards the city, we gotta stop it before..."
There was a loud sound of whirling and swishing of machines and suddenly a blue box with police sign on it appeared at their side out of nowhere and a young man wearing a ridiculous suit with a bow-tie and a beautiful red-headed girl came out from the box.
"Great, I'm officially naming today as The day Percy is not allowed to finish his sentences without something weird happening", thankfully Percy finished saying this sentence.
