Shuklambara dharam Vishnum
Shashi Varnam Chaturbhujam!
Prasanna Vadanam Dhyayet
Sarva Vighnopa Shantaye!!Known to be the Most popular shloka. Any ritual or any prayer will be started by this particular shloka.
So I am Starting the book with this shloka and the actual history behind it.Generally Hindus pray to Lord Ganesha before starting a particular work. For that they chant this shloka first in the name of Lord Ganesha.
This shloka is known to be a
'saadharana shloka'which means by the means of this any Devata can be prayed. As we know Lord Ganesha is a remover of all vighnas(obstacles),we acknowledge him by this shloka and by this practice it has been rooted in people's minds that this shloka is clearly meant for Lord Ganesha. Only a few people know this is not. This shloka's history dates back to Krita yuga when Lord Bramha was ordered to do the Shrushti.
When Bramha is about to create, A demon named 'Somaka' steals the vedas and flees. Able to do nothing, Bramha prays to Lord Vishnu for help .Then Vishnu incarnates into a Giant Fish( Matsyavatara), the first of the 10 divine incarnations and Kills 'somaka' and retrieves the Vedas.
Then Bramha, on seeing the Grand Matsyavatara of Vishnu, praises and prays to him by chanting this Particular shloka.
This is clearly depicted in the 'Matsyapurana'.Being a Saadharana shloka this can be chanted for any Devata but the actual deity for this shloka is the Lord of the Lords himself.
So There is nothing wrong in Chanting this shloka for Lord Ganesha. Only to share the Actual history behind it ,I said this. I am not against praying to Lord Ganesha and I will never be. This is just for telling the Origin of the shloka.Forgive me If I did any mistake.
Thank You
