TWENTY-FOUR: Mark

"Ladies and Gentleman please fasten your seatbelts and bring your seats into the upright position to prepare for take off, thank you"

There is a crackling over the intercom system as the flight attendent hangs up the announcer. I look out the window at the runway where the crew are hurrying around the plane, checking everything one last time before the plane left.

"How's your head," Jim asks.

"It's fine," I lie. I have a splitting headache and I know that this is probably the last time I'll see California. I only hope that I can make it to London to see Kendall at least one more time.

"I can't believe I let you talk me into this," Jim said interrupting my thoughts. "There is no way you sitting in a pressurized cabin while being taken thousands of miles off the ground can bode well for your exploding brain."

"Thank you Mark, that makes me feel so much better. And what do you mean talked you into it? I would have gone with or without your blessing."

"That's true," he muttered looking ahead down the aisle. "Have you decided what your going to say to her yet?"

"Nope."

"Sounds like you've really thought this plan through, A+ buddy. I'm going to the bathroom."

Jim got up out of his seat and I turned in my seat to face the window again and laid my head back against the headrest. My head was pounding and I could feel the blood rush over my temples, giving them a pulse of their own. I wanted to just close my eyes and sleep but I knew I wouldn't be able to, so instead I stood up and opened the overhead compartment to get something from my bag.

"Excuse me sir, you need to be in your seat," A flight attendent said as she tapped me on the shoulder and signaled to my vacant chair.

"Sorry," I mutter as I shut the compartment and sit back in my seat.

"Sir, are you okay?" The attendant pointed at my nose, which is now bleeding.

"Oh, shit," I said as I wiped away some of the blood. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just get nervous before flying." I flashed the worried attendant a smile and she relaxed.

"Ill get you some tissue."

"Thank you..." I paused and waited for her to say her name.

"Alex," she smiled.

"Thank you Alex."

As Alex walked away Jim returned to his seat. "Shit you're bleeding again," he muttered as he started to reach into the bag filled with medical supplies Jim insisted we would need.
