Part 10: This Is Awkward

After our -very dramatic, if I say so myself- conversation, Lucas leaves.
It's a good thing that he leaves, cause Miles walks in the door right as he climbs out the window. Miles looks at me and Maya and reads our expressions.
"Who was that Riley?" He asks.
I turn away. "Maya?" he tries.
Maya answers, "He was our middle school..um...boyfriend?"
"Riley" he says, "I thought you said you never had a boyfriend"
"Lucas doesn't count!" I say. "He left before we could make a decision"
Miles says, "So you guys are like, a triangle?"
Maya's face drops. All the confirmation he needs.
Suddenly serious he asks us, "Do you guys still like him?"
Ugh. This question AGAIN.
"I do" says Maya. "I'm not sure Riley still does though"
I look up at her.
Miles says, "Why do you think that?"
Maya answers him , "Because she has you."
He looks at me. I hold his gaze.

Christmas break is over. Schools back.
As I walk into the school hallway with Maya, I see Lucas hanging around my locker.
Maya's been trying to avoid him, so she makes up some fake excuse about something then leaves me to deal with Lucas.
"So..." I say, walking towards him. "You know this doesn't have to be awkward, right Riley?" Lucas says.
"Well yah...." I say, "so...do you wanna sit together with us at lunch?"
"Why not?" He says.
So I say, "See you later?"
He nods and I run off to class before I can embarrass myself any further.

At lunch I nervously sit down at the table with Maya, Farkle and Miles, waiting to see if Lucas will show up.
He does and sits down awkwardly beside Maya and Farkle, across from me and Miles.
"Hey guys..." he says while slowly putting down his tray.
"So you're Lucas" Miles -sort of- asks him. Well, more of states it.
"Yup" Lucas says. "And you must be Riley's boyfriend."
"Yah" Miles says with a weird look on his face.
"So..." Maya says, "This is awkward..."
Farkle is just sitting quietly at the table.
Before things can get worse, I decide to formally introduce them.
"Miles this is our friend Lucas" I tell Miles. Miles raises his hands as if to say oh okay.
"And Lucas," I turn to Lucas, "this is also our friend Miles"
He says, "He also is your boyfriend right?"
"Yahhhhhhhh" I say.
"Riley let's make a run for it before they fight over us" Maya says.
"Wait, where's Farkle?" I say.
We all turn to the empty chair where Farkle was just sitting.
"See, Farkle really is smart. He already made a run for it" Maya states smiling.
"Now let's go Riley"
I couldn't agree more. So I tell the guys,"Please try to get along with each other."
Then I let Maya lead me out of the cafeteria and leave Miles and Lucas to try and get along with each other.
