Why, out of a lot of events to choose from, why did the school have to pick a dance?
It's 2 weeks later, and as me and Maya walk into the school, the principle makes an announcement through the intercom.
"Students, listen up! In two weeks, the freshmen will be having a semi-formal dance! How's that? There's a poster hanging on our announcement board with all the details! See you there!"
The school just had to pick a dance, and it just had to be a semi-formal.
Right now when two boys are pretending that they get along just for me, even though I know they can't really stand each other.
I already had a bad experience with something like this before in middle school.
Right after the intercom turns off, many students (including me and Maya) rush to the announcement board.
I read it, it says more details about the dance, and when I'm done I walk away.
Maya stays for a little longer, then I see her expression change and rushes to me and says, "Why do we have to ask the boys?!"
I turn around in surprise, "Wait, what?!"
I run back to the poster and see I missed that tiny detail at the bottom.
"This can't happen" I say all panicky to Maya.
Then our sophomore friend Paige steps before us, "Girls, this happens every year. This dance is like your officially-in-high-school-now dance "
"But why do the girls have to ask the dates?"
"The school always wants to switch things up for the first dance" Paige says in her usual sort of calm and relaxed manner. "Like last year, they made it a 60s theme"
"That sounds a lot better than girls having to ask boys" I say.
"It's different every year" Paige says.
"Why does this always happen to us?" Maya says.
"Well, good luck to you two butterflies" Paige says before walking away.
"Yeah" Maya says, then after Paige walks away, "Good luck to us."
"Especially me" I say.

"I gotta do the right thing" I tell Maya.
It's after school and I'm sitting in the bay window with Maya.
I've been avoiding both Lucas and Miles all day and vice versa.
"You always do the right thing" Maya says.
"I don't know who to ask, but Miles is my boyfriend so..." I say.
"So you're going to ask Miles" Maya finishes for me. I nod.
"Well, then I'm going to ask Lucas" Maya says. I get mixed feelings. She reads my face.
"Riley, you have to decide who you like so we can fix all of this" Maya tells me.
"Go ahead, ask him if you like" I tell her.
"And you're okay with that" Maya says.
"Why do you care?" I say, "You're Maya, you always fight for what you want"
"You're my best friend Riley," she says, "I don't wanna hurt your feelings"
"Well,I'm telling you I'm fine with it."
"Are you sure?"
"Yah. I'm gonna ask Miles."
"Sure?"
"Yes, Maya"
"Okay"
"Okay."
I'm not actually sure if I'm okay.

Later that afternoon, I watch as Maya meets Lucas outside my house.
I watch them talk for a while.
I watch her ask Lucas to the dance.
I watch Lucas hesitate.
I watch as he looks up at my window, unsure if he sees me sitting there.
I watch him turn back to Maya.
I watch Maya's face light up.
And I watch as Lucas says yes.

Even later that same afternoon I walk over to Miles' place.
I ask him to the dance.
Of course he says yes.
Then he kisses me, but for some reason I don't get the same feeling as before.
