Part 13: The Dance

I walk into the dance hand in hand with Miles.
That's when I see Maya in her sparkly peach dress already on the dance floor, with Lucas. She sees me and waves. I wave back. Then she gives me a hand signal.
"Well, do you mind if I go to the washroom first for a little bit?" I ask Miles.
"Anything for my girl" Miles says. I laugh like, heeheeheeeee, then hurriedly rush to the washroom where Maya is waiting for me.
"How is it going so far?" I ask her. "Well, it's ok" she says.
"Well, it's time for retouches" I say, grabbing my makeup kit out of my purse.
Maya tells me about her night so far as I retouch her makeup, and I get a few butterfly knots in my stomach, which I ignore.
After retouching, we rush out of the washroom.
Farkle passes by us with Smackle as we go out. We greet each other and talk a little, then Miles shows up behind me. "Drinks?" he offers, holding out a glass of iced tea for me. "Sure!" I say. I take the glass and drink the iced tea. I put down the glass, then I get pulled from behind. I laugh and wave to Farkle, Smackle and Maya as Miles pulls me out in the dance floor and we start to dance. We're having such a good time, that I didn't even notice how fast the time is passing. After about a little more than a half hour of dancing together, Miles then says something about looking for an empty table for us to sit in then goes away to do just that. I see him go away, then suddenly I feel myself being pulled from behind again. I turn around, thinking it was Maya playing a prank on me, but to my surprise, it's Lucas.
He drags me out of the dance and into the hallway.

Lucas starts to talk but I cut him off, going first.
"I thought you weren't gonna talk to me tonight" I say.
"Why would you think that?" He asks.
"You know why" I say.
"Do you still like me?"
"Lucas..."
He turns away, hurt showing on his face. "Why do you always have to be like this?"
My eyes widen in protest, but I stop myself from saying anything.
He continues. "Ever since I left and came back, you and Maya have been acting... differently, around me. Especially you. Maya, I don't mind, she's Maya. But you...Riley," I look down at the floor when he says my name.
"Riley, I can't take it. This feels weird and wrong. You're different"
"Why mind me, and not Maya?!"
"You're Riley!"
My eyes narrow when he says this, and I know he knows I'm clearly mad.
"Change happens Lucas, we all grow up, we all change" I tell him.
"I was just gone a few months!"
"What's your point?!"
He sighs. "I wanna know if you still have feelings for me, I need a decision"
I am so irritated by now, I'm shocked when he says this.
So I don't say anything.
"If you're not gonna say anything, fine, I'll find out myself" Lucas says.
He starts to lean in, grabbing my face, and right away I know what he wants to do.
I suddenly react, pulling away so fast and pushing him so hard he almost falls over but instead bangs into the lockers.
"What the hell!" Maya runs out of the dance, having clearly heard the commotion.
I ignore her and turn to Lucas, who is now sitting on the floor.
"Why would you do that!" I too mad to even notice that I'm shouting so loud and that Miles has come in behind Maya.
"I need to know, Riley"
"You don't just do that!"
"What did he do?" Maya asks.
"He tried to kiss me!" I tell her.
"What?!" another voice cuts in, and that's when I notice Miles standing behind Maya.
"Lucas!" Maya says.
Miles gives Lucas a death stare.
"I need to know, Maya, once and for all" Lucas tells her.
"She has a boyfriend!" Maya
Miles clears his throat, forcing Lucas to look at him.
"She has a boyfriend" he repeats for Maya.
"Of course I know she has a boyfriend Miles, you think I'm stupid?!" Lucas says.
This causes Miles to get mad. Lucas is already standing by now, but Miles pushes him against the locker. This takes Lucas by surprise, but before Miles can do anything else, my dad comes running into the hall, along with Farkle.
"Enough!" He steps in between Miles and Lucas.
Miles backs away, then Lucas tries to go after him. "Lucas!" Farkle tries to say.
My dad stops Lucas, and he too backs away.
"All of you please, get out of here" he tells us.
Farkles face drops as we start to walk away.
I wave him goodbye, and he waves back.
We reach the exit.
All of us walk out of the school.

Once we're out, Maya turns to Lucas.
"This was supposed  to be my night, Ranger Rick, I was your date!"
Lucas turns away at that.
Maya keeps going. "I was your date, stupid, then you try to kiss her!" She motions to me, and I give Lucas a face. She goes on, "You try to kiss her, and she even has a boyfriend" she points to Miles, and Miles gives Lucas another death stare.
Lucas tries to speak, but Maya stops him.
"I know what you're gonna say, 'Maya I need to know!" Bla bla bla" she says, mocking him. "But I don't care! I'm pretty sure you already know! You freaking saw how she reacted!" Lucas tries to speak again, but Maya won't let him. She keeps going.
"You saw how she reacted, you Huckleberry! What does that say?! She even pushed you against the lockers!" Lucas tries to talk again, and this time Miles stops him. Lucas doesn't even try to continue. But Maya does.
"Why didn't you try to kiss me, you also would have known!"
Lucas's face drops, but Maya keeps on going strong.
"You know why? You know why?! Because you like her!!! You like her, I didn't even stand a chance!"
Maya's voice becomes so loud Lucas flinches. But I, pretty sure it's not just because of the volume of her voice that he flinches. Lucas stops trying to talk anymore.
"If you like her, why even accept my offer to the dance! I know, cause you feel sorry for me. I don't need your pity!" Maya finally pauses. Her voice volume goes down to a nervously quiet one. Quiet but deadly. She finally ends her rant with this,
"If you didn't even wanna go with me, if you don't even like me, why even accept my offer? Why even pretend there's a triangle? See here, there's no more triangle. It's not a triangle if there's only one person. There's only one person left in this, and that's you."
Maya starts to walk away at this, not even looking back. Me and Miles join her, and even I don't even bother looking back, because I already know how Lucas's face will look like.
