hey there delilah,
i realized that your birthday was last week, and i forgot to send you a letter. i’m a horrible lover, i know.
(happy belated birthday, delilah!)
do you remember the nights we spent sitting on your roof back in high school?
(i like how i say “back in high school”, as if it was so long ago. in reality, it was only a month or two ago.)
anyways, back to your roof. we’d sit on your roof and talk, and when there was nothing left to talk about, you would ask me to play you songs on my guitar. you always seemed to ask for the same songs, but i never tired of playing them, as you never tired of hearing them. i could have played you “all my loving” by the beatles and “boots of spanish leather” by bob dylan and “little wing” by jimi hendrix for the rest of my life. tonight i played all of those songs during my set, and i told them all that they were our songs. i hope that was a sufficient present.
of course, then morning glory came on and rocked the house, playing songs that adam and griffin wrote, or oasis, or green day, or blink-182. they always floor the audience and make them forget about me, but that’s ok. they’re my mates, and i’m happy that their band is moving forward, even though at times i seem to be moving backwards. people always seem to love morning glory wherever we go. they'll be big one day.
i sat down tonight and i tried to write your song, but nothing would come out. you know when you love something so much, and someone asks you why you love that thing so much, and you can’t think of an except that just you love it? that’s how i feel about you, and that’s what writing that song feels like. i’m going to keep trying, though, and when i finish that song, i’m going to scream it to the world.
now stop reading this letter and go out and have a birthday beer for both of us. i love you.
love always from madison
