Anna’s POV

Every day since Matt showed me Rebbeca’s grave a visited it. Maybe it was the fact that I felt so bad about taking off before I could get the chance to find out that she was even a girl, or maybe it was just that I wanted to feel closer to the child that I never got to know.

Who really knows, all I know is that I was there every day.

Sometimes Matt came with me, only when I asked him to though.  I usually found him working in his office. He spent a lot of time there now; he said he was trying to work on a new album and possibly on producing some works. I was really proud of him, though he seemed to be a lot older then I remembered. Maybe it was the year of hard booze and minor drugs (hey he hasn’t told me anything but I was almost his wife, I’m not stupid) that aged him, or it might have been the heart ache. But I didn’t remember the crease between his eyebrows that he got when he was reading or the glasses that he now wore.  I knew that he was getting better but I didn’t know how to put the life back into him.

One night after Matt went back into his office to work I took Devin into the den and talked to him about it.

“I don’t know what to tell you Anna” Devin said “This is the best that I have seen him in a long time, right now I’m just happy that he’s working and living and not just hiding in his room and drinking”

“But he’s not the same Dev” I said, rubbing my arms “It’s like there’s something missing”

“He has you though” Devin said “What else could be missing”

I bit my lip, unsure how to answer, I looked around the room and my eyes landed on a picture of a little face.

“Natalie” I said, brightening up “He needs Natalie”

Devin sighed and rubbed the back of his neck

“I don’t know” Devin said “I don’t want to set her up for disappointment”

“Disappointment?” I scoffed “Devin Matt has been clean for nearly a month and a half now with only one little slip. She won’t be disappointed.”

“How do you know?” Devin snapped “Like you said, something isn’t right with him yet, how can we be sure?”

I was a little taken aback by Devin’s outburst, but I could see the fear in his eyes. Composing myself I stepped forward and took Devin’s hands.

“I know it’s a bit scary” I said “Your family has been broken for what? Half a year? Devin, don’t you want the chance to make it whole again?”

Devin looked down at me with sad eyes, gripping my hands hard.

“I just want things back to the way they were” He said “Before the accident”

I squeezed his hands

“I know” I said “I know”

Matt’s POV

I woke up early one morning, I had been tossing all night thinking about a song I had been writing and was eager to get back to it. I hadn’t been able to sleep a solid night through since Anna left but it had gotten better since she had returned, even though I didn’t have her in my arms it was just better knowing she was there.

I got dressed and went down to my office. To my surprise there was already a hot coffee sitting on my desk. I didn’t know who put it there until a second later there were footsteps behind me.

“I thought I heard you get up” Anna said cheerfully “Guess it was a good thing I made coffee, you look like you had a hard night”

“It wasn’t one of my best” I said “I had a song in my head and couldn’t get it out”
