8 year old Rogue sat all alone on a bench in the park. Sting had run off, chasing Lector, who was chasing Frosch. That left the quiet raven haired boy all alone. The playground was desolate, the wind brushing through and making the swings creak as they moved ever so slightly.
This was the worst part. The mind numbing loneliness. That was one of Rogue's worst fears. Being alone, or left behind. He liked to pretend nothing fazed him, or that he preferred to be alone. That was most certainly not the case, and Rogue couldn't take pretending for long. Sweeping his inky hair back, he buried his face into his hands and cried. Sting was gone, Frosch was gone. There was no one left.
Until your voice called out to him.
"Hey, Rogue! Why are you all alone?" (Y/N) cheerfully skipped up to the sniffling boy on the bench. You two were friends, but you had never really talked in depth. Rogue quickly wiped away his tears and spoke.
"N-No reason. St-St-Sting just went after the Exceeds." Rogue tried to steady his voice.
"Are you okay? You seem...sad." Your (E/C) eyes were brimming with sympathy and sad curiosity. Rogue nodded, unable to form words.
Your magic had always given you the uncanny ability to see through lies, and see what people truly were afraid of. It wasn't your main magic, but you had the useful ability. Examining Rogue closer, you saw right through him, and saw him for his fears. You slipped onto the cold, stone bench beside him.
The two of you sat in silence. "R-R-Rogue. I know what you're afraid of, you don't have to make it a big deal," He looked at you with a newfound curiosity. "Everyone deals with their fears, whether it's heights or being alone."
He looked down again. "I get what you're saying, but it's a huge thing for me. I've tried my best to overcome it, and I can't." He didn't know why he was spilling all of this to you. Not even Sting knew this.
You bit your lip and furrowed your brow in thought. Suddenly, your head snapped up. "I know! Let's make a promise. A promise never to leave each other. Like an oath! I know we don't talk much, but you're my guild mate, and I don't want to see you sad!"
Rogue's mouth dropped open slightly. The tears that had dried began to well up in his eyes again, and he choked out in a shaky voice, "You would do that?"
You nodded fervently. "Of course! If you promise, I promise!"
And from that moment on, you, Sting, and Rogue were best friends.
~Twelve Years Later~
The air still smelt like blood. Instead of Sting's cackling laughter floating through the air, there was just silence. Instead of your melodic voice Rogue had grown to love, there was just the echo of your tortured screams and terrified wails. He was waist deep in rubble, flesh, and blood digging through the layers of hell to find you and Sting. He knew the chances of finding Sting alive was extremely small, but Rogue's dragonslayer ears could still pick up your petrified whimpers of suffering. His hands were torn and bloody, but he still fought against the pain.
The smoke was smothering. Everything was fire, in all directions he could only see the burning flame.
Lifting the last metal beam off, he exposed you. You looked like hell, to say the least. You were beaten black and blue, your clothes were torn, and to top it all off, you had a steel bar ripping a hole through your chest, a hole that was currently spilling blood violently.
"R-Rogue." You choked out, blood seeping out of the lips Rogue fantasized about kissing. He gasped, tears coming to his eyes as you tried to cough out more words.
"They killed Sting. They killed him right in front of me." You coughed out, and splattered blood everywhere. The sobs still wracked your body, shaking so bad, the ragged edges of the hole beside your heart tore open even more.
"Shhh, shhh. We-we're gonna get you out of this babe. It's o-o-okay, just hang in there." Rogue shook harder than ever, his last hope of ever finding his brother alive dwindled out. He couldn't lose you too, he just couldn't.
"R-R-Rogue. All my life, I have l-l-loved you. I'm s-s-so sorry it had to end like this. You were the light of my life, and for my last few seconds, y-y-y-you will continue to be." You wheezed out, blood still steadily pouring from your wounds.
Rogue's eyes widened. It couldn't end like this, you loved him back! You had a future together, a future with kids!
"DON'T YOU DARE CLOSE YOUR EYES (Y/N)!" His screams were desperate now. He pressed his lips to yours, tasting your blood, salty and metallic. Despite the tangy and awful taste, the kiss was everything he'd dreamed it would be. Rogue almost hoped he would wake up from this nightmare to find you sleeping next to him.
But alas, when he opened his eyes, your anguished face still stared at him. Managing one last smile, you closed your eyes. Your body went limp in Rogue's arms, as you were set free from your suffering.
"NO! (Y/N)!" The tortured howl pierced the night. He sobbed, letting out all of the emotions he had kept inside all his life. It was like a floodgate had opened, letting his entire soul out in the form of water. "YOU BROKE OUR PROMISE!"
It was his worst fear. He was all alone in the world. You were gone, Sting was gone, Skiadrum was gone. Frosch and Lector were gone. There were no more chances. Rogue Cheney was alone in the world, and there was nothing anybody could do about it.
Except one thing.
Lifting up a broken piece of wood, he mumbled out wretched final words, cursing the gods and all they have done to him and his loved ones. Taking one more glance down at you, he takes your cold, lifeless hand in his, and tightens his grip on the wooden stake.
"I will always be by your side, (Y/N)."
And plunges it straight through his heart.
~Epilogue~
When Rogue opened his eyes, all he saw was white. Sting was standing over him, smirking. Dazed, he shook his head and stood up. Lector, Frosch, and Yukino were there, and upon further observation, so were you. You smiled, and Rogue ran at you, taking you in his arms, and kissing you deeply. After you two broke away, he embraced and exchanged greetings with Sting, Yukino, then the Exceeds. When he turns back to you, you speak up.
"You're never alone Rogue. I promise that."
A/N So I gave it a kinda happy ending. How many of you did I make cry? Be honest, most of you shed a couple tears. And to __Rogue__Cheney__, this probably isn't what you were hoping for, but I felt like making it angst. Sorry *-* Anyways, if you guys want to chop me up and hit my with my own limbs, be my guest. Please send me hate, I will NEVER forgive myself for writing this o-o But even if I ruined your life, I love you all <3
