When Indy finally reached the cave entrance, he heard voices coming from a tunnel leading deeper into the volcano. He drew his gun just in case, and slowly headed in their direction. As he rounded a curve, he stopped short. The tunnel led out onto a small ledge, which was overlooking a massive cavern. At the back of the cavern was a large structure that was, without a doubt, the temple he was looking for. It was hewn from the volcano itself, and was reminiscent of the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings.
However, what stopped him was the pair of guards standing on the ledge. They did not seem very alert, for they were casually carrying on a conversation and had their weapons leaning against the wall. They obviously weren't expecting company. The rest of them must already be inside the temple, Indy thoughtto himself. He slowly crept up behind them. He raised his revolver high above his head, and then brought it crashing down hard on the base of the first guard's skull. He crumpled to the floor in a heap. Astonished, his partner turned and reached for his AK-47. Before he got to it, Dr. Jones pistol-whipped him across the face. He stumbled backwards in a daze. He shook his head and started towards the adventurer, his fists clenched tightly. Indy levelled his revolver at the guard's chest. "Don't make me pull this trigger, sonny boy."
The guard scowled and spat, "You wouldn't. The instant your gun goes off, my companions will be here to make you regret it."
Indy smiled. "That may be true. You're just forgetting one thing."
The thug arched an eyebrow. "And that is?"
"I always shoot first." With that, he adjusted his aim and shot the guard's knee. He fell to the ground, moaning and crying out in pain. Indy picked up his assault rifle and smashed the butt on his face, knocking him out.
From inside the temple, Indiana Jones heard shouts and cursing, and within seconds four burly men came running out, weapons drawn. They looked around the cave, unsure of where the shot had come from. There was a large number of stalagmites rising from the ground, and the shot had echoed in such a way that they could not be sure where Indy was. He knew this, and planned to use it to his advantage.
