A dim light fell across my face instantly, waking me up from my deep sleep. I craned my neck towards the alarm clock planted on the white bedside table. It was 7 p.m. I slept for freaking 20 hours!!. Damn jetlag.
As I walked towards the living room, my eyes wandered around the environment in which I would be living for the next 3 yrs. The lonely apartment felt nothing like home. Did I say I was settled in? Scratch that. My clothes were all over the place. Half the stuff was unpacked and placed in a corner, absolutely no hint of food in the kitchen. I noticed a few things placed on the couch, but It wasnt mine. Maybe, my roommate's arrived. Shit. Did she know I was here ? Duh! My stuff was thrown all over. Leaving my thoughts behind, I decided to investigate the room around the cornor to confirm her arrival.
"Dude! Leave me alone! I don't want to talk to you anymore " A voice came hurdling into my ear as I walked towards the room.
Suddenly, the door swung open and I jumped. A skinny girl in white tank top and jeans stood before me,her green eyes twinkled like the distant stars in the space but they looked sad , her red hair tied into a messy bun showing off her forehead.
"Sorry, I din't mean to eavesdrop. Um...I'm Aria, by the way " I said and broke into an awkward smile
"No,it's fine. It was just my ex. I'm Emily." she reached out to hug me and for some reason she broke down into tears.
Apparently she had a sister who looks like me back in Ohio, whom she misses a lot. How is that even possible? Dude, I'm Indian.
"You wanna go out for dinner?" she said breaking the awkward silence.
"Um...I'm starving. Let's go" I wore a black leather jacket and made way for the parking lot. Emily hopped onto her pink Volvo's front seat. I sat next to her in the passenger seat. We exchanged information about our lives and she's nice and she's an American, so she agreed to be my tour guide. Although we hail from different family backgrounds we could somehow relate to one another.
We arrived at this cute little Italian restaurant since we both loved Italian cuisine.
Emily seems nice although she crys a lot and wears a little too much make-up but she's bearable.
We planted ourselves on the counter near the window. She took out her IPhone from her jeans pocket and clicked a photo of us together. I could see her uploading it on instagram already with a "Hey there, roommate" caption
"So..how are the Americans treating you?" she said glancing at her phone.
"Um...so far so good"
Then the waiter came and we placed our orders.
"So what's your major?" Emily enquired
"I'm here to do my law degree and you?"
"I thought so. You're lawyer material" she smirked. "I'm a major in forensic science"
"Hey! that's a pretty cool job." I said sipping on my drink.
"Says the lawyer" she joked.
"Excuse me. I need to use the rest room" I said awkwardly and made my way to the restroom.
A familiar voice came rantling into my ears.
"Ma, mai badh mai bath karoonga"*
I turned around only to find myself standing incredibly close to a muscular figure. I breathed heavily taking in his scent more than oxygen.
"Naveed?" I screamed in an alarmed tone.
