"1 cup of coffee and a tex mex regular? That'll be 10 dollars" the lady from across the cafe counter croaked.
'thankyou' I said handing 10 dollars to the lady in exchange for a red tray of coffee and a sandwich.
It was a Saturday morning, exactly 24 hrs after my exams had got over, I had to intern for the next couple of months. I had already sent out my application and interviewed for a few law firms. 'Crane and Schmidt' had sent me an offer letter while I was still writing my exams. I had the whole of the next week to consider ny options. I sat in the corner table, The cafe was bounded by glass, A tall lean figure with curly hair walked past the cafe with a girl. it took me only 3 seconds to realize it was Dan.Before I could motion him or call him, he entered the cafe with a blonde girl, by this time, I tried to hide my self because he's probably out on a date and I dint want to intrude, but he spotted me and started to walk towards me.
'Hi! You've been MIA since exams began, how you been?' his deep voice echoed in my ears.
'Well, I'm an Asian, I take exams seriously'
'Seriously? Then why did I see you running around the campus screaming something in Hindi or something.
'oh that night, Um, I was pretty drunk and Emily suggested me to go for a jog, She says thete's magic in New york's air'
He giggled and widened his lips as though he was going to say something, but he was interrupted by that blonde girl who stood to his left side and gave him a kiss on the left cheek.
'Oh, btw, this is kylie, my girlfriend'
I almost dropped my coffee cup when I heard him say that.
' hi! ' I said giving her a hug. She returned the cold gesturing my fake smiling and walking away.
'So, is this what you've been doing all this while?' I whispered to Daniel after Kylie walked away.
'She's hot isn't she?' he said winking.
I gave him a faint smile and excused myself with my coffee.
The New York air was chilly, the yellow daffodills peacefully rested on the streets, the whole city was in a moves in a infinite hurry , like they were all going to get laid or like their life depended on getting into the first taxi that passes them.
The autumn smell infused with the air, leaves fluttered to and fro, the morning dew suspended in the cold morning causing my skin to itch. The sight was beautiful, If you excuse the spring breakers doing the walk of shame and cars honking ridiculously. It was almost romantic, like not Shah Rukh Khan romantic but poetry romance, in a sense, The cacophony of the birds chirping made it even more beautiful.
New York city, has a lot to offer to a person. So, I decided to walk back to the campus instead of taking the cab. It was only a few blocks away. I love Saturday mornings, I'd always come to this small cafe in lower Manhattan, order a caramel grandé and a tex mex and look at the city like it was the first time, every Saturday since my first encounter with this city.
'Hi!' My thoughts were disrupted by a girl in black bandage leggings and a beige tank.
'Um, Hi, do I know you?' I responded in non-cohesive tone.
'You're Aria, aren't you?' She squeaked.
And my Saturday just got creepier.
'um, before you get creeped out on me, I'm Mellonie and I follow your blog, You're take on 'gloabalizing compassion' which was published on the NYU online was fab' she said as her face lit up.
'really? Gee, thanks, I didn't think people would actually read it? I only did that for extra credit' I said, clueless and slightly awkward.
I was always awkward around compliments because I feel like people are only complimenting me because they have to.
'well, you were good, are you a part of any book or literary clubs? like they're so many good ones in NewYork.'
'No, actually I'm new here, well not exactly new, I've been here for 2 months but you know I've either been studying or drinking or both' I said with a faint giggle.
'You're so funny! I remember you wrote a review on ' The catcher in the rye', hey that reminds there's this meeting in World Book Store,in Brooklyn, today at 3 pm, You can sign up today, you know if you're interested' She blabbered in one single breath and took out a booklet kind of thing from her bagback and handed it to me.
I think it was a pamphlet of the club or something, I couldn't pay attention to most part of what she said, must be the accent or her incredibly long legs. My god, Americans are so tall.
'So, think about it, I gotta run, bye' she said intrupting my thoughts, again.
'okay, Bye! I'll think about it' I said and walked silently back to the apartment.
Emily was making us breakfast and playing really loud Taylor swift music. I dropped the pamphlet,my phone and my wallet on the island counter and walked right into the shower. I had absolutely no plans and I was still debating in my mind whether or not to attend the book review thing.
'hey, Aria' Emily said knocking on my door. 'Did you check the NYU online? your article has gone viral! Oh my god, you're like so cool now!' her voice resonated through the wooden door.
'what?' I squeaked, wrapping a towel around me and plunging the door open. I eyed the MacBook that Emily was holding.
My article had about half a million views, Woah, that's a lot.
'Omg' I squeaked,again.
Emily walked over to a closet and bought a beige silk dress that stops about a inch above the knee and a brown sweater from my closet.
'wear this and i'll drop you at WBC at 3' she said and walked away with her MacBook. Immediately after she left, My phone buzzed a text from Naveed Khan.
N: wow, I didn't know you can write.
A: Aw, there's still so many things you don't know about me,bby.
