Shoot! That was the first thing that came to mind as I woke up in the morning. I had officially broken the ultimate rule in safe sex, a condom. What if I was pregnant? What if Mr. Fane had a horrible STD? Was that why he had never had sex before? Or do you need to have sex to acquire STDs? My line of thought was interrupted by Mr. Fane sitting up.
"Morning Katie," he said, glancing over at the already awake me.
"Do you have any STDs?" I asked. He raised an eyebrow.
"I don't think so," he said, grabbing his boxer shorts off the floor. After pulling them on he walked over to a wardrobe. Taking that as a hint I dragged my own underwear on. I was blinded by something thrown on my face, after I clipped my bra on. I dragged it off to see it was a white polka dot shirt and black pants.
I realized I was dreadfully late for work when I glanced at the clock, though. Mr. Fane wouldn't mind, right? I mean like he's right here.
"We've gotta get to work!" I told him. He dragged on a yellow polo.
"Oh, yeah," he said, "Work. You go on ahead, my job doesn't start yet?" What? But we work together. Not to mention that sounded more like a question than a statement. Whatever. I yanked on my boots and hustled out the bedroom.
"I'll drop you off," he said, following after me. We hopped into the car.
"Where to?" he asked. Is he serious right now?
"Deluge headquarters," I said, slightly worried. He nodded, looking over at me with a bit of shock. The drive was a silent one. I got out of the car, and it sped away. Did he have a meeting elsewhere or something? That would make more sense.
I walked over to Leina. She smiled handing me a key, and a small piece of paper, before turning her attention to the computer she had been hastily tapping away at.
Please make your way to my penthouse. I have multiple meetings to attend to today so I will be unable to receive your answer at this moment. Further instructions on your work will be provided to you in the penthouse.
Sincerely, Kirt Fane
I folded the paper up, pressing number 54 in the elevator. As I got inside I found it much like the day before. On the desk, though, was an envelope addressed to me. Who knew Mr. Fane was such a strange guy? I mean who bothers with letters for such small things? I opened it up.
You may have the day off today, but wait here until I return.
Sincerely Kirt Fane
What was with him and notes? Sighing, I sat down on the bed. I wonder if there are cameras in here. Watching everything I do. My phone rang, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was my brother. I could handle him now, I picked up.
"Hello?"
"Oh, Katherine, thank god, you answered."
"Sorry," I said, I had hurt him. Not in the way that I normally teased him, but actually hurt him.
"No, it's fine. I'm glad you answered. And I'm not going to ask you to come back. I get that you won't listen to me, but at least tell me where you are." I thought for a moment.
"Please, I just want to make sure you're safe." I sighed.
"I live at Palm Crest Apartments. I'm at work right now." I heard him sigh in relief.
"Where do you work?"
"Delu-Daylight. I work at Daylight."
"Oh, can I visit you some time?"
"How about dinner? I'll call you, tonight."
"Sounds good."
"Great." I hung up.
"Who was that?" I let out a yelp in surprise.
"M-Mr. Fane!" I hadn't even heard the door open.
"You didn't answer my question."
"It was my brother."
"Brother?"
"Yeah, he's been calling me nonstop since I left home."
"Oh, and your other answer?"
"What?" What was he talking about? Oh wait, the job offer.
"I'm sorry Mr. Fane, but-" He held a hand up.
"Let's talk more about your brother," he said, sitting down beside me.
"My brother?" He nodded.
"Well, um, he's 16 and lives with my parents. We've always been close since our parents are well mostly busy."
"What do they do?"
"Mother's a stay at home, but is always out attending events and doing social service. Dad, well he's a lawyer. I rarely see him though, I don't even think I remember what he looks like."
"So you left because they were too busy?"
"No, um..." It was a matter I didn't like to talk about much. But, he is my boyfriend, I suppose I should tell him, at the least.
"Well, I had finished college not too long ago. I was playing our mini baby grand piano, and my family was chatting. The subject of my marriage came up. I wasn't too keen on the idea of marrying the creepy old judge, my father was friends with. That's when mother asked me as to how much longer I planned on being a freeloader, and living off of their money. I suppose I couldn't blame father, he wasn't even there, but I knew I had to leave then, so I did." Mr. Fane wiped a tear of my cheek, I didn't even know I had been crying.
"Katherine." His voice was like the sweet scent of lemonade on a hot summer day. And his lips were like the cool ocean water. Salty yet comforting. He pulled away from the kiss, as I went in for another. His right hand cupped my cheek.
"I love you," I said, softly in between kisses. He pulled away, looking shocked.
"What?" I asked him. He just smirked, before standing up.
"I accept all your answers. Tell me if you change your mind for the job offer, and get back to work Ms. Bell."
