I fiddled with the key to my apartment. I'd often resorted to picking the lock with a bobby pin, but I was lucky today. The door opened with a click.
I stepped inside the dark room, flicking the lights on as I did. Palm Crest Apartments. It sounds like a rich apartment complex sitting on the shoreline, but it's actually in the middle of downtown and featured one bedroom one bath apartments.
I kicked off my heels. I hated that about Daylight and many other places. You were expected to come in high heels, a dress or a skirt and blouse combo, and a face dunked in make up. I headed to the bathroom to wash off the pounds of concealer hiding the bags under my eyes.
Changing out of the black and white dress I was wearing into some shorts and a cami, I turned on the TV. As a kid I always thought news was boring and unnecessary, but now I find it boring but necessary.
News is such a depressing thing. A child somewhere was murdered, a restaurant burned down, a car accident here, tax fraud there. It was all necessary information, but it's saddening that reporters get paid more for the bad news.
I switched off the TV. It was a Trump rally, I was never much of a fan for politics. Plopping into bed, I pulled out my phone.
*40 missed calls*
Oh, brother. Quite literally. Ever since I had left home my brother had been calling non stop. It seemed unfair to punish him for what our parents did, but I wouldn't know how to say no if he asked me to come back.
It had been three weeks since I had left. Neither of my parents had bothered to call or text, my 16 year old brother wouldn't stop though. I considered fighting over custody for him, but it didn't seem worth it to disrupt his life with a case I'd lose anyway.
*Twelve new emails*
I scrolled through it to see one from Mr. Fane.
Dear, Katherine Bell and team
I would like to address the fact that I shall be paying Daylight one million dollars, as agreed upon, for sole rights to your anti virus software.
Sincerely, Kirt Fane of Deluge.
After this nap I'm having ice cream, pizza, and I'm rewatching the Harry Potter movies. Putting my phone down I snuggled up. At that moment my cell rang. Really world, really?
Frowning I looked at the screen. It was Daylight's CEO, Valance Pate. What did he want? I picked up.
"Hello, Mr. Pate," I said, unlike Mr. Fane, Mr. Pate was an ugly old creep.
"Katie," he said.
"Katherine," I corrected. It wasn't wise to mess with the CEO, but I couldn't help it
"Yes, yes," he said, undeterred, "Congrats on the deal. Mr. Fane and I have just signed the contract. I expect to see more of such work from you."
"Yes, Mr. Pate," I said.
"Well then, gotta get going. Goodbye," he said.
"Bye, Mr. Pate," I said, before hanging up. I sighed, sinking once more into the mattress for a well deserved nap.
