My apartment was the most perfect spot in the 20th ward it was perfect distance between the real estate agency and the CCG headquarters, and just a couple blocks down from my favorite ramen place. Also It's bottom floor doubles as a coffee shop. But the most important reason why I moved here was because this was the first place my mom ever sold and it was one of her greatest achievements and she didn't care that she sold it to a ghoul, for she was the one who taught me not to judge Ghouls.
As I walked past Antieku's front door stand I estimated they would only be open for another 30 minutes. I walked in the front door and saw Yoshimura at the counter cleaning cups. "A bit late aren't we Tatsuki, the usual?" He said with a raggedy old voice. "You know it old man, yeah I was out with some friends and lost track of time." I said as I took a seat in front of the counter. "Oh don't worry about it I'd serve you half past closing anything for the son of Shunsetsu." He said reassuringly and handing me my usual drink: a three shot espresso with one sugar. "Thanks Yoshimura." I took a whiff of the brewed drink it's scent warmed my heart, and cooled my head. I then took a sip of the strong drink it's heat I was already used to. "Aah delicious as always, man I will never understand how you guys can make your coffee taste so good, I mean no other coffee place in the 20th ward could compare to this." I complimented. "Thank you Tatsuki it's always nice to hear your praise." Yoshimura returned. There was a five minute silence between us, as I thought about a time when I was not so joyous.
After my recovery from the hospital and my family's funeral. I spent many a night on the streets with a drink in my hand unable to go home and face those tragic memories. It wasn't until one day when Yoshimura showed up in my alleyway and offered me a place to stay, of course I didn't recognize him at first, but when I stepped through the doors to Antieku the memories flooded back in I remembered when my mom first took me to Anteiku. I was eight years old and not use to the taste of coffee in fact it disgusted me, but I always drank it because it put a smile on my mom's face, and eventually it started to taste good to me. From that point on I decided to stay in Antieku where Ghouls and humans could meet together in peace, and that is where I also decided to join the CCG to try and change the ways both humans and Ghouls do things, and maybe just maybe bring peace to this violent world.
"Umm excuse me?" Came a timid voice a few feet to the side a teen in the staff outfit and wearing an eyepatch over his left eye. I starred at him for a few seconds and realized he was also a Ghoul, mostly because of his posture it was very shallow and protective and because of my position where my gun was revealed it also made him a little skittish, but also I noticed his nose was sniffing very rapidly. He was trying to catch my scent if I was either human or Ghoul once he realized he tried looking away. He held up his cleaning tools to draw my attention and faced towards Yoshimura. "Yoshimura I finished the bathrooms." "That's good Kaneki you can go home now." Yoshimura responded "But sir the tables still need wiping off and the chairs need to be stacked." "It's fine Kaneki I got it, you go on home now" "Alright then." The boy put his supplies away grabbed his things and began to walk out trying to avoid eye contact the whole time. Once he reached the door he glanced back and said "Goodnight." "Goodnight Kaneki." Yoshimura responded I simply nodded. "So he's a Ghoul too eh." "Half-Ghoul actually he had an organ transplant with that binge-eater that died a couple weeks ago, been staying with us ever since." I was quite shocked at this news "Wow really! Man that must suck how's he doing is he alright?" "He's adjusting." "We'll make sure to keep an eye on him, Doves would kill for another Half-breed." "Don't worry he's in good hands." "Yeah I sure hope so." I finished, drinking the rest of my espresso then stood up. I pulled out my wallet and began to grab a couple yen when Yoshimura grabbed my wrist. He looked at me with an irritated look on his face and said. "How many times do I have to tell you, you don't have to pay." I put my wallet away and replied with a sigh, "You know if keep refusing my rent and my coffee money you're going to go bankrupt one day." I began to walk away towards the tables. "At least let me help you finish cleaning, anything for my mom's first achievement." Yoshimura then looked to the side with a bit of sadness as he remembered Shunsetsu. He looked back at me, then tossed a cleaning cloth and said. "Who am I to deny a broken human." He threw me the cloth and I began wiping down the tables until I could see my reflection. I then stacked the tables said goodnight to Yoshimura and headed up to my room. But before I reached halfway up first stairs Yoshimura called out. "Tatsuki!" "Yeah!" I responded heading back down stairs until I saw his smiling face. "I'm glad you're feeling better." He said reassuring me. I didn't know how to respond with the truth so I simply lied. "Me too." As soon as I answered I walked back up the stairs avoiding the old man's gaze. I didn't even think that lie was convincing. But I knew I was definitely not feeling better, not sure I ever would. I continued to think about it, even after I entered my room and closed the door.
I got undressed and sat down on my bed in nothing but a wife beater and underpants. The effect of coffee always seemed to do the opposite for me I only became more sleepy after drinking some no matter how strong it was that's why I usually drink it before bed or in the evening to help me fall asleep quicker, so I could get the nightmares over with faster. But before drifting off I decided to see what the news was up to. I turned on the TV which was always set to the news channel. "Fzzt- breaking news a new group of Ghouls known as Aogiri have been causing massive attacks in five different wards now and may be headed to the 20th ward. The Chairman of CCG had this to say." I shut the TV off after that I didn't care what the Chairman had to say he's was an idiot. "Man when are they going to get it through their thick skulls that this is not just their country anymore assholes. Man first binge eaters and half-breeds, and now this, man what is the world coming to" I sighed to myself as I laid back on my bed slowly waiting for sleep's embrace. I thought about if it was even possible to change the world anymore for it has only grown more violent. I closed my eyes only wishing I could have kept them open a little longer but as soon the nightmare reality stepped in I was trapped. The images of my family's massacre could never compare to the real thing no matter how gruesome I thought the fake images were. I slept all night thinking I would never wake up, but when my eyes opened I only realized it was another day. And at six o'clock in the morning I thought to myself. 'Only fourteen hours until the next nightmare.'
A little longer than usual because I needed to throw some more details in. Hope you liked the references and hope to update soon.
