"Well son," The man waddled back through the hallway. "You got the place lookin' good. Surprisin'ly enough, your AC unit ain't in bad shape at all. I say just gon' head an fix a couple a them lights an check your circuit braker an you set. Porch jus' might need a few new screws like you dun already tol' me an paint it over."

"The wood isn't rotted or anything?" I asked.

He let out a boisterous chortle. "The wood's as good as new in this place. Whoever was livin' here 'fore you had it nice an ready for the next fam'ly." He then tilted his chubby face inquisitively. "Where you from, son?"

"All around, you could say." My lips thinned and his expression mimicked my own.

"Imma leave it at that then. C'mon by my store so you can get you some bulbs and stuff, y'hear?"

His name was all over town.

Nathanael.

The handsome young white man, with the prettiest blue eyes and a funny accent.

Funny that I never got to hear it. He left my porch yesterday morning without uttering a single word. He just stared.

I thought he was quite weird. Lisa did too, saying that he would often stare off at distant things before realizing that he was being spoken to or addressed.

Now he worked outside on the house across the street. I peeked from behind my curtains as he swung away at the nails that would hopefully fix that creaking porch.

The elderly couple that lived there prior to him had the house slightly renovated but never got to the porch. So Nathanael came back this afternoon with bags full of supplies before going to work.

After finally leaving the window, I went to the kitchen to prepare my dinner. Once done it had fallen dark, but the lights in the home across the street were still on so I packed a little more than half the portions into containers and headed over.

I knocked a short rhythm on the door then waited, rocking slightly on my toes.

The door swung open and Nathanael stood before me. His matted sandy brown hair and delicious masculine scent suggested that he just got out of the shower. He seemed expressionless, but in his eyes I could sense his surprise.

I smiled softly, "I brought dinner, if you want it. It's chicken spaghetti, salad and rolls." I maneuvered the pile of containers into his hands.

I caught a hint of a smile that passed quickly through his features. "Come in?"

"Maybe later, darlin'. I-' I stepped away and jerked a thumb behind me. "I gotta get back to work on some things."

His pink lips parted into a small O shape before he nodded. I backed away from him then made my way back into my home, fully aware of the burning gaze that lingered until I shut my door. When I did I leaned against it and sighed.

"Oh Nathanael,"
