Chapter 30 Birthday Extravaganza

Neco's POV

Chucky Cheese was a blast, which I'm embarrassed to say made me act more like a child then I have in years. And on a 44 year old man childishness is not exactly the most redeeming quality. Everyone else seemed to be getting into the spirit of it too though. I'm sure even Helen would be having a great time if she was here, even if she wouldn't admit it. Reagan was having enough fun for both of them, and I'm sure she'll tell Helen all about it when she gets back.

After a fun few hours we pack up and head to phase two, roller skating. Apparently Devon had never been roller skating before. It was fun to watch him stumble and fall like a 4 year old. It might sound kinda mean to enjoy that but let me clear things up, It feels nice to be embedded into a memory that he'll never forget. I feels somewhat historic. Don't get me wrong I did help him catch his balance more than a few times, I'm not heartless.

Devon was glowing with happiness by the time we were done. "Hey Neco I have something to tell you" Devon said with a newfound confidence. "What is it?" I ask. "We'll ever since the first time I saw you I've felt this sort of connection betwee-"

"-Whoops we better get going if we want to make it on time to your next surprise" I cut in.

As I started driving my mind yelled at me. He was going to confess, I saw it in his eyes. He was moments away from saying the L word. Not to be confused with the TV show. Wait! This is no time for jokes. Under no circumstances can I reject someone on their birthday. This is a nightmare.

"We're here!" Talon shouts excitedly.

I look up at a sign that reads Rockythunders Rock Climbing Adventure. Well this is what you have to expect when you hear Talon and Birthday in the same sentence. All jokes aside he really did an amazing job with Devon's three part birthday extravaganza, and that's exactly what I told him as we unbuckled our seatbelt's and walked inside.

"Im Susan, your rock climbing instructor for today" the older lady in a blue vest said to us. "I want you to divide yourselves up into pairs of two, and then we can begin." I partner up with Willow, and Devon's with Zeak. After the lady shows us how to work the equipment and climb properly, it's time to give it a go. I hold onto Willows rope as she begins to climb the tall cliff-like structure, pulling it to make sure I don't give her too much slack. She makes it almost halfway up the cliff before her hand slips and she begins her downwards decent. I slowly lower her to the ground as her feet repeatedly lands on the structure until she's standing up fully unharmed, and exhilarated.

"Is it as fun as it looks?" I ask her. "Very much so" she says quietly. Her face stretches into a smile.

I get into my harness and tighten the straps before the blue vested lady helps me get hooked into the rope. I start to climb, finding my footing as I go. I get higher, and higher, then to top it off I get even higher off the ground. I grab another rock and hoist myself up another step but when I look up I'm met with a very good sight. I mean a familiar sight. A butt covered by tight black shorts, that I could somewhat see up.

"Devon what are you doing on my side of the rocks? Get back to your own side" I hiss as my foot slips off the rock, but I managed to catch my footing.

"But the rocks on that section of my side are too hard to climb" he pouts, pushing himself onto a higher up rock.

"Fine, but after this part you should get back to your own side."

"Thanks Neco."

After a few more foots up he dose end up on his own side. I look beside me and see his smiling face, the others a ways below us. Through my Peripheral vision I can see him staring at me. I look over at him and him smile widens creepily.

"Now that we have some time together..." Devon starts. "I thought we could finish our conversation from earlier." I begin to climb faster at those words, though surprisingly he's right next to me following my pace. "Devon we really don't have to talk about this right now" I rush. He scowls. "Yes, yes we do, because you make me crazy. Your always making sure I'm alright and that I don't do something too stupid, and fuck if I didn't fall for it. I love you okay!?" He say frustratingly.

"I love you Neco" he whispers.

His face twists into one of worry and doubt as I stare blankly at him. I wish I could reassure him.

"Devon I-" I pause.

"No, it's okay, I'm fine" he tells me with a smile, but the tears leaking down his face tell a different story.
"I'm sorry" I apologize. He lifts himself onto the top of the rock climbing wall, and I follow behind him. Once we reach the elevator door we detach out harnesses from the rope, and step inside. It's eerily quiet for a moment, until I look over and see Devon's face. His expression makes my heart constrict painfully In my chest. His face is scrunched up as he wipes furiously at his tear filled eyes.

I slam my hand down on the big red button that stops the elevator. Devon freezes, his face buried in his hands. I pull him into a hug and rub circles into his back as he quietly sobs into my shirt. "Please pet, what do I need to do to make you feel better?" I ask. He goes quiet. Then he mumbles "just take me home, I want to be alone."

"Okay if that's what you want."

I push the red button again, nothing happens. The elevator stays completely still. I push the button a few more times but still nothing happens. I hold down the intercom button. "Yes?" Whoever was on the other line said. "The elevators stuck" I say. The person laughs "no really, what's up?"

"THE ELEVATORS STUCK" I repeat. I emphasized my words in hopes that the dimwit on the other line would realize I was being serious.

"Oh shit. Sorry, I'll go get the manager."

I roll my eyes and let out a sigh. Great. Just fucking great, this is exactly what I need. I look down at the boy in my arms, and a scared look plastered over his sad one. "Shhhh we'll be out of here in no time, no need to worry" I assure him.

"I trust you" he says in a wobbly voice.
