When Annabeth and Percy got married, they had one child. Besides each other, their daughter Sally was their world. She was smart, sassy, beautiful, and incredibly funny. Both Annabeth and Percy had dysfunctional childhoods and because of that, they wanted the exact opposite for their daughter. While Sally met all of their demigod friends, Chiron (who was in his wheelchair), Tyson (who was wearing sunglasses), and both of her godly grandparents, she was otherwise sheltered from the demigod world. Even with the immortals who she met, she wasn't aware of who they truly were. Percy and Annabeth kept her so out of the loop that they weren't even sure if she could see through the mist. Though they felt guilty and sad that they couldn't tell her the truth about everything, they did firmly believe that they were doing the right thing for her.
But as stated above, Sally was smart. She knew that her parents were keeping things from her. She'd lost track of the number of conversations that had ended the second she walked into the room, she'd seen the amount of visitors who received looks from her parents right before they spoke to her, and finally she had always been suspicious of the locked box in her parents room that they kept under their bed (she came across the box one year when she was trying to figure out what her parents had bought her for her birthday) It was clear that her parents were hiding something from her, but she didn't know what.
It was a school assignment, during a unit of Greek and Roman Mythology, that led to everything final clicking together. Words such a demigods, quests, prophecies, and so on were used frequently during this unit. All of those words rang a bell with Sally; they were words that she had overheard her parents talking about before. Then came the aspect of the family tree; was the fact that she had two grandparents who, according to her parents were in the midst of a lasting grudge, named after two of the Olympian gods really just a coincidence. Not to mention, beyond just her grandparents looking younger than they should, no one would tell her a thing about either of their families. Slowly ideas started forming in Sally's head; to an outsider they would have seemed absurd but to her they made sense. Finally she decided to test her parents.
When Sally came home one day asking Annabeth for help on a research paper, it wasn't anything new. The two had a good relationship and Annabeth often helped her daughter with school work. What did come as a surprise to Annabeth though, was when Sally bluntly asked,
"So what do you know about the Greek and Roman gods?" After a few moments of stuttering around in shock, Annabeth responded with,
"I know some stuff; why do you ask?" Sally shrugged.
"Just figured you'd be an expert on it by now," Annabeth's eyes widened. "I mean you do have a lot of mythology books scattered around the house. And it's for my essay." After stepping out of the room to compose herself, Annabeth was able to successfully help Sally with her essay. Truthfully Sally hadn't needed much help at all, but her moms behavior served as proof for the theory she was creating. Next she decided to test her father.
One evening when Annabeth was at work, Percy and Sally were eating dinner together when out of nowhere Sally asked,
"Hey dad, does grandpa Poseidon love the ocean?" Raising his eyebrows as he looked at his daughter with suspicion, Percy spoke,
"I guess you could say that." He continued, "why do you ask?" Sally shrugged.
"Oh no reason," she picked at the food on her plate before adding, "does he love it so much that he would live in it." Percy who had been taking a sip of water, nearly spit it out. "I mean if that was possible of course." It took all of Sally's self control to not laugh at the expression on her fathers face. By this point, Sally was confident that her theory was true. Now all she needed was a way to confront her parents. She schemed up an idea that was simple but bold.
It was a Saturday evening when the confrontation took place. Percy and Annabeth had gone on a date, while there they discussed Sally's recent behavior, and Sally was home alone. She took this time to prepare the house. Using a combination of materials, Sally got the house ready for her parents arrival. When she was done, she sat on the couch and watched tv. The moment she heard her parents car pull into the driveway, she turned the television off and the video recorder on.
"Sally we're home," she heard Percy shout. Sally responded with,
"I'm in the living room," even though her parents only had to walk a few steps to get to the living room, it felt like it took them eternity to do so.
"How was your," Annabeth's sentence was cut off by Sally shouting,
"Surprise." Both of her parents were speechless as they stared into the living room. Sally had created signed that read anything from, "I know your secret," to "welcome home daughter of Athena and son of Poseidon." She had blown up balloons and they were floating around the room. Every Greek and Roman mythology book that Sally could find, were stacked throughout the room. When her parents finally got the voices back, they spoke at the same time,
"So I guess we have some explaining to do," Percy said at the exact moment Annabeth said,
"How'd you figure it out?" With a smirk on her face, Sally shrugged and responded by saying,
"I just put all the pieces together."
