The year is 1891, 3 cowboys, Billy, Joe and Curly are returning to their ranch in South Dakota from a 600 mile cattle drive across the great plains south in to Nebraska. They are 50 miles from their ranch when a fierce storm hits. The conditions are near white out when they see a shadowy figure beckoning them to follow him. The figure is wearing a wolf skin coat complete with the head. They are not to sure what to do, but conditions being as they are they follow the man. He leads them to a tipi, when they peer inside and see that there is a fire blazing away.
As the men go inside the tipi they can see the man is an old Indian. The Indian gestures for the men to sit, which they reluctantly do. They are not quite sure what to make of this old Indian wearing a wolf skin coat. The Indian then speaks, in English, "my name is Wind Foot". The cowboys tell the Indian their names. Wind foot takes off his wolfskin and gives the men some alcohol made from fermented berries. Wind foot then starts to tell the men stories from his life, as is the custom when drinking and sitting around a fire. Wind Foot tells the men that as far as he knows he is the last remaining free Sioux Indian living on the great plains of South Dakota, the rest have all been forced by the white man to live in 'Wazi ahanhan oyanke', or in English the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. Wind Foot then proceeds to tell the story of his life, starting with how he came to get his name.....
